A Tudor-inspired home built in 1914 and designed by renowned San Antonio architect Atlee B. Ayres has hit the market for just over $2.8 million.

Ayres, known for building Alamo City landmarks such as the mansion that became the McNay Art Museum, left a lasting imprint with signature homes spread throughout historic neighborhoods.

This structure, the Robert Martindale House, is both distinctive and massive, at 7,461 square feet.

Among the home’s many amenities are a pool and spa, a bar-equipped basement, a separate garage apartment and a four-car garage.

The home’s exterior is neo-Tudor in style, thanks to the striking contrast between its dark, heavy exposed wooden beams and cream-colored infill. This style is further complemented by the tiled front porch and the green gables of its Ludowici tile roof.

The house is ideal for entertaining, featuring a dramatic dining room with a double-sided fireplace, wood paneling and a vaulted ceiling. Nearby, the showstopper kitchen features walnut cabinetry, a wine fridge, soapstone countertops, double islands and a marble wall behind the range.

A separate butler’s pantry houses a second dishwasher, an ice maker and a sink. Separate his-and-hers guest bathrooms provide extra convenience when entertaining.

The primary bedroom suite includes a fireplace and a built-in bookcase as well as a mirrored dressing room with a center island and extensive built-ins. The marble-lined bathroom includes a freestanding tub, a separate glass-enclosed steam shower and double vanities.

A tiled sitting room off of the primary suite boasts a fridge, dishwasher, sink and plenty of space to enjoy a morning coffee within its sunlit confines. Two other large bedrooms with ensuite marble-lined bathrooms are on the second floor.

Not only does the home have a basement — a rarity in Texas — but it also boasts a fourth-floor living space, which further distinguishes it from other San Antonio residential properties.

The spacious top floor features four built-in bunks, a coffee bar, an updated full bathroom, a TV lounge area, a balcony with city views and a cedar-lined closet.

Not to be outdone, the basement comes with its own private bar and adds another inviting space for entertaining, along with ample storage space.

Outside, a large new pool, hot tub and gazebo offer additional space for entertaining.

A separate, renovated garage apartment with a kitchen, bathroom and laundry facilities provides guest quarters or the potential for rental income. The garage apartment is currently tenant-occupied on a month-to-month lease.
