Sumrall made it clear that no matter who starts under center, the Gators’ offensive identity will stay consistent and the game plan won’t be any different.

“The offense doesn’t change really with one [quarterback] or the other,” he said. “I do think for us it’s nice because we don’t drastically have to change who we are. We may lean into one guy doing certain things a little differently than the other, but it doesn’t all of a sudden completely give us a different type of team.”

Jones most recently took the reins in Texas following Philo’s shoulder injury, leading the Gators to a 27-24 comeback victory over the Longhorns. Through five appearances this season, he’s completed 45 of 64 passes for 407 yards and tallied four touchdowns and two interceptions.

Meanwhile, Philo has been slotted as Florida’s starter for much of the season, throwing for 1,341 yards on 105-of-149 passing. He also accumulated nine touchdowns and three interceptions through the Gators’ first six games.

Regardless of who gets the start on Saturday, Florida’s quarterback will need to establish a run game and navigate the pocket to extend plays.

While Georgia’s defense leads the SEC in points allowed per game (15.86), it struggled to contain quarterback Byrum Brown in a 27-24 loss to Auburn on Oct. 17.

The Bulldogs also rank second in the conference in rush yards allowed per game (91.43), but Brown rushed for 115 yards and a touchdown on 26 carries in the win over Georgia. If Florida can replicate that success and get its quarterback to make plays outside the pocket both with their arm and legs, it has a much better chance of exploiting a stout Georgia defense.

Limiting Gunner Stockton and winning the turnover battle

The Bulldogs boast the top scoring offense in the SEC (43 points per game), and quarterback Gunner Stockton has been a big part of their success.

He’s thrown for 1,570 yards on 117-of-158 passing to go along with 16 touchdowns and four interceptions.

Florida defensive coordinator Brad White praised Stockton for the poise he’s shown and his ability to rally the team, and with Smart as an elite defensive mind, it’s imperative for the Gators to disrupt Stockton, limit his passing game and keep their own offense on the field.

“He’s a winner. He’s tough,” White said. “Everybody on that offense believes in him and that he’s going to make the right decision.”

Keeping the Georgia offense off the field starts with moving the sticks to extend drives and forcing turnovers to disrupt the Bulldogs’ offensive momentum.

At Gator Talk on Monday, Sumrall stressed the importance of winning the turnover battle, citing that teams are 25-3 in SEC play when they finish with a plus-1 turnover margin.

“The biggest stat in that Auburn-Georgia game that led Auburn to win was three turnovers in the positive for Auburn,” Sumrall said. “Being plus-1 in the turnover margin in SEC football right now is pretty important.”

If the Gators can rattle Georgia with an early takeaway, it should make life easier for a Florida offense that has averaged nearly 40 points per game thus far.

Showing up with passion but not letting emotion take over

While rivalry games bring heightened emotions, more than half of Florida’s 2026 roster consists of transfers who haven’t gotten the experience of playing in a rivalry game for the Gators.

That presents a unique challenge in itself, as Sumrall needs to ensure every player understands the historical context and significance of the rivalry.

“It’s a rivalry game, and you have to have an appreciation for the history of what the game means to our fanbase to fully understand that,” Sumrall said. “We have 117 rostered players and 60 of them have never been here for a Florida-Georgia game, and so helping them appreciate how important this game is matters.”

However, plenty of Gators have ties to Georgia, and there will be no shortage of intensity on Saturday.

Running back Jadan Baugh is an Atlanta native, while Faulkner, Philo, Bailey Stockton and Eric Singleton Jr. all spent time at Georgia Tech, where there’s no shortage of hatred for the Bulldogs. Linebacker Myles Graham also spent time living near Atlanta during high school, adding another layer of emotion to the rivalry for the third-year Gator.

“We know that it’s an opportunity of a lifetime, and we want to be in this position,” Graham said. “We’re excited for it. We’re gonna capitalize on it.”

But while rivalry games come with an abundance of hype, passion and emotion, it’s just as important for the Gators to remain grounded and treat the game just like any other. Though it is an annual matchup against Florida’s most heated conference rival, it still only counts as one win on the schedule.

To earn that win, the Gators will need to limit Stockton, extend drives, play clean on both sides of the ball and stay locked in until the clock hits zero.

“Us building up the game more than what it is doesn’t help us win the game,” Sumrall said. “It’s not going to come down to a motivational hype speech.”
