Legendary Dallas high school football coach Freddie James, who built the Carter Cowboys into one of Texas’ most dominant football programs, has died at 89, his family confirmed this week.

James served as head football coach at Dallas Carter High School from 1982 to 1995, recording 139 wins and establishing a football dynasty that earned national attention.

His death has prompted an outpouring of remembrance throughout the Texas football community and beyond, with former players and coaches reflecting on a legacy that extended far beyond wins and losses.

Under the Friday night lights, James was remembered as a coach, mentor and father figure who helped shape generations of young athletes.

“He let me know that it’s not about the wins and losses; it’s about the legacy of people you impact along the way,” said current Carter High School head coach Spencer Gilbert.

During his tenure, James transformed the Carter Cowboys into a powerhouse, with several players going on to compete in college and the NFL.

His coaching career also included controversy. Carter’s 1988 football title was stripped after it was discovered that a player was ineligible.

Despite the challenges, James’ influence on Texas high school football remained significant. His career and legacy were depicted in two motion pictures, and scholarships were established in his name.

For those who knew him personally, James was much more than a football coach.

“Coach James was more than a football coach. He was a mentor, he was father, a grandfather. Everything you asked a man to do,” Gilbert said.

Wylonia Johnson, James’ goddaughter and now a coach at Carter High School, reflected on his lasting impact while standing on the sidelines of the football program he helped build.

For Johnson, James’ influence will continue through the people he mentored and the opportunities he created.

“True legends never die, so he won’t die. We’ll just have to let him live on through all of things that he did throughout his life,” Johnson said.

Though James is gone, his legacy lives on through the Carter Cowboys and the generations of athletes whose lives he helped shape.
