Kratom is derived from a tropical tree native to Southeast Asia and is sometimes marketed as a natural remedy for pain, anxiety, and opioid withdrawal. Kratom is legal to purchase and can be found at gas stations, convenience stores, smoke shops, and online retailers.

“The kratom products when they are produced can be candies, snacks, gummies,” Dr. Walkes said.

Health officials say what is inside some of these products is raising the biggest concern.

“Kratom itself has a chemical in it, Mitragynine, which can be changed with chemical processes to something that’s more potent called 7-OH,” Dr. Walkes explained. “And that is the chemical that’s concerning because it is a more potent chemical and it is a semi-synthetic opioid.”

Concentrated 7-OH products can cause dependence, serious health complications, and potentially life-threatening overdoses.
