WACO, Texas (KWTX) – Texas voters will elect a governor Nov. 3 to serve as chief executive of the state.<\/p>\n
The governor is elected by citizens every four years, according to the Office of the Texas Governor. The governor must be at least 30 years old and a resident of Texas for the five years immediately before the election.<\/p>\n
The governor makes policy recommendations that lawmakers in the state House and Senate may sponsor and introduce as bills. The governor also appoints the secretary of state, as well as members of boards and commissions who oversee the heads of state agencies and departments.<\/p>\n
Constitutional and statutory duties include signing or vetoing bills passed by the Legislature, serving as commander-in-chief of the state\u2019s military forces and convening special sessions of the Legislature for specific purposes, according to the Office of the Texas Governor.<\/p>\n
The governor also delivers a report on the condition of the state at the beginning of each regular session, estimates tax revenue needed, accounts for public money and recommends a budget for the next two years.<\/p>\n
The governor may grant reprieves, commutations and pardons on recommendation of the Board of Pardons and Paroles, declare special elections to fill vacancies and appoint qualified Texans to state offices, boards and task forces.<\/p>\n
Seeking the office are Republican incumbent Greg Abbott, Democrat Gina Hinojosa and Libertarian Pat Dixon, according to Texas Secretary of State ballot information.<\/p>\n
