{"id":482421,"date":"2026-10-31T14:25:14","date_gmt":"2026-10-31T14:25:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/482421\/"},"modified":"2026-10-31T14:25:14","modified_gmt":"2026-10-31T14:25:14","slug":"owner-customer-describe-stabbing-during-comedy-show-at-buzz-mill-coffee-bar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/482421\/","title":{"rendered":"Owner, customer describe stabbing during comedy show at Buzz Mill coffee bar"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>AUSTIN, Texas \u2014 A 20-year-old man is in custody after police say he stabbed two people Wednesday night at the Buzz Mill, a coffee bar in Austin\u2019s East Riverside area.<\/p>\n<p>Shankar Temple Grace is charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, according to the Austin Police Department (APD).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cbsaustin.com\/news\/local\/man-in-zombie-costume-stabs-2-at-austin-coffee-shop-police-say\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">PREVIOUS COVERAGE | Man in zombie costume stabs 2 at SE Austin coffee shop, police say<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Buzz Mill owner Jason Sabala said the incident happened during the coffee bar\u2019s weekly comedy show after Grace was reportedly asked to dispose of an outside alcoholic drink.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnder TABC rule, we had to ask him to throw it away or leave,\u201d Sabala said. \u201cAnd he decided he wanted to head out towards the back of the property.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sabala said Grace then walked through a set of doors to the back patio area, grabbed a knife, and stabbed two people, a security guard and an employee working sound for the show.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are very excited to say that everyone is going to be okay,\u201d Sabala said.<\/p>\n<p>Joe Blackman, a regular at The Buzz Mill, arrived Wednesday night shortly after the incident.<\/p>\n<p><p>KEYE<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were, I think, probably about 15, 16 police vehicles,\u201d Blackman said.<\/p>\n<p>Blackman said when he arrived, police had taped part of the establishment off with crime scene tape. He said some people fled, while others retreated inside from the patio.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s a place where you don&#8217;t see any drama. So to see something like this happen, I think it just shakes people, you know, throws people off,&#8221; said Blackman.<\/p>\n<p>Austin police confirmed that the suspect was wearing a Halloween costume during the incident. <\/p>\n<p>However, Sabala said that Grace often wears costume-like makeup.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s always dressed in makeup,\u201d Sabala said. \u201cSometimes it&#8217;s in clown makeup. Evidently, last night, it was in zombie makeup. But he dresses like that on a normal basis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sabala added that Grace had attended multiple shows at the venue before Wednesday night and that he was not aware of any previous disturbances.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s been through here on multiple shows. There\u2019s never been any instances of APD being called. There\u2019s never been any instances with security being called,\u201d Sabala said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cbsaustin.com\/news\/local\/testimony-begins-in-trial-of-man-charged-in-austin-san-antonio-shooting-spree\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">ALSO | Testimony begins in trial of man charged in Austin-San Antonio shooting spree<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In order to move forward, Sabala said he is leaning on the community The Buzz Mill has built over its 13 years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think a lot of people, especially in this area, they understand that East Riverside\u2019s still a rough diamond,\u201d Sabala said. \u201cIt still has some areas where it\u2019s not perfect, but it\u2019s our community, and it\u2019s something that we need to care about, study, and do the work to figure it out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Buzz Mill plans to continue its weekly comedy series.
