Will Matthew McConaughey<\/a> run for Texas governor in 2026? The Uvalde-born actor has publicly mused about a gubernatorial campaign in the past, but rumors around him entering the race have reached a new fever pitch as posters reading \u201cMcConaughey for Governor\u201d were spotted in Austin this week.<\/p>\n

A viral clip posted to TikTok showed tents with a political banner, American flags and a blown-up photograph of McConaughey\u2019s face. <\/p>\n

McConaughey, who is known for acting in True Detective and Interstellar, told People in September his political future remains to be determined.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor now, I\u2019m very secure with \u2014 the original thing I knew I always wanted to be was a dad,\u201d said McConaughey, who has three children with his wife, Camila.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf I did that now,\u201d he said, referring to a bid for public office, \u201cI wouldn\u2019t be able to be the father and spend the time with the family the way that I have so far and it\u2019s something I\u2019m not ready to sacrifice.\u201d<\/p>\n

So far, Gov. Greg Abbott has announced his reelection campaign. State Rep. Gina Hinojosa of Austin and Houston businessman Andrew White have also entered the race on the Democratic side.<\/p>\n

If McConaughey were to foray into politics, it\u2019s unclear if he\u2019d register as a Republican, Democrat or third-party candidate.<\/p>\n

The actor has frequently professed his love for his home state. He\u2019s a fixture at the football games of his alma mater, University of Texas at Austin. McConaughey also appeared at the Texas Capitol this year, advocating for a bill that would increase funding for film incentives<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Sitting beside Woody Harrelson, McConaughey told Texas lawmakers the pair had given up 15% of their salaries so their upcoming Apple TV+ series \u201cBrothers\u201d could be filmed in Texas, rather than Georgia, whose state government which offered more incentives.<\/p>\n

Production of Brothers reportedly paused in June, but the show was spotted filming at an Austin restaurant this week.<\/p>\n

The campaign-style materials are part of the comedy, which will follow fictionalized versions of McConaughey and Harrelson, as their families live together on a Texas ranch.<\/p>\n

Filming for the series in Central Texas used realistic political props and signage, contributing to the mixed reactions online. One widely shared TikTok clip shows several campaign-style signs and a mock announcement setup.<\/p>\n

Viewer comments ranged from confusion to amusement, with users asking, \u201cIs this for real or a movie?\u201d and \u201cI thought he was running for real,\u201d while another wrote, \u201cThat campaign stuff looks too legit.\u201d<\/p>\n

McConaughey graduated from UT Austin with a degree in radio, television and film, and went on to build an acclaimed film career with roles in Dazed and Confused, A Time to Kill, The Lincoln Lawyer and Dallas Buyers Club.<\/p>\n
