His mind<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/cowboys\/2025\/11\/06\/dak-prescott-marshawn-kneeland-death-dallas-cowboys-teammates\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> then drifted to a player he\u2019s shared a locker room with the past two seasons: Marshawn Kneeland.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup _1teeyfa8 ls9zuh1\">\u201cHug your teammates,\u201d he told the Haughton Bucs, \u201cand tell your teammates you love them. If you\u2019re going through something, don\u2019t be afraid to share it. You and your teammates, whatever you\u2019re going through, you can get through.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup _1teeyfa8 ls9zuh1\">Thursday will mark a week since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/cowboys\/2025\/11\/06\/dallas-cowboys-defensive-end-marshawn-kneeland-dies-at-24\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kneeland died by suicide.<\/a> Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer, speaking for the first time publicly since Kneeland\u2019s death, said he received a phone call that alerted him of reason to be concerned about the Cowboys defensive end. Plano police even did a welfare check on Kneeland before midnight Wednesday. Soon after, at 1:31 a.m. on Thursday, Frisco police found Kneeland dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup _1teeyfa8 ls9zuh1\">Schottenheimer spoke somberly on Wednesday as he recounted the week that\u2019s been. He said they won\u2019t move on after the loss of Kneeland \u2014 a teammate who had a smile that could drop them to their knees, Schottenheimer said \u2014 but they will move forward, together.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup _1teeyfa8 ls9zuh1\">\u201cWhen one guy is hurting, someone else has to pick them up. If the head coach is hurting, someone\u2019s got to pick me up,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd I\u2019m hurting. I\u2019m hurting. And these guys have picked me up, and I\u2019ve picked them up. That\u2019s what we\u2019re going to continue to do because we love one another.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup _1teeyfa8 ls9zuh1\">Grieving together didn\u2019t happen initially. The Cowboys were on a bye week this past week. Their last meetings had concluded well before the news of Kneeland\u2019s passing started to spread. Schottenheimer, like a doctor making rounds virtually, said he started making as many calls as he could to players and other staff members as they all \u2014 together, but separated \u2014 tried to make sense of what happened. They had a video call on Thursday that included Dr. Heather Twedell, the team\u2019s mental health and wellness consultant. Still, there was physical distance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup _1teeyfa8 ls9zuh1\">\u201c[But] you\u2019re not together,\u201d Schottenheimer said. \u201cWe\u2019re always going to be stronger together.
