EL PASO, Texas (KFOX 14, CBS4) \u2014 The Lubbock-Cooper Pirates defeated the Del Valle Conquistadores 45-42 at Conquest Stadium on Thursday in the opening round of UIL State Playoffs. <\/p>\n
Del Valle started fast with Arizona State commit Jake Fette rushing for a touchdown on the opening drive of the game. Later in the first quarter, Fette would connect with Josiah Nunez to give the Conquistadores a 14 -3 lead. The Pirates would rally back in the second quarter, scoring 21 points to take a 24-21 lead into halftime. In the third quarter, Fette would rush for his second rushing score of the night to put Del Valle back on top. The Pirates would score two straight touchdowns to take a 38-28 lead. Once again, the Conquistadores clawed back and Fette hit Dylan Gonzalez for a touchdown to cut it to a three-point game. The Conquistador defense would come up with a stop and force a punt. But, Del Valle would muff the punt and Lubbock-Cooper recovered inside the 10-yard line. Lubbock-Cooper’s Chamayne Johnson Jr. would score on the very next play, reestablishing the 10 point advantage. Fette would rush for a highlight reel 70+ yard touchdown to keep his team in it. However, the Pirates would run out the clock to claim a 45-42 victory. <\/p>\n
“The boys having been fighting all year long especially these seniors,” Del Valle head coach Rudy Contreras said. “We came up short at the end, but even in those final minutes our boys still fought. We didn’t get the win tonight, but I am extremely proud of their effort.” <\/p>\n
Fette put on the Superman cape one last time as a Conquistador, scoring six total touchdowns (three passing and three rushing). However, it would not be enough to get the victory in what would be the final chapter in his storied high school career. <\/p>\n
“You don’t realize it’s in the past until it’s in the past,” Fette said after the game. “Being here for four years with these guys that I love, it means a lot. It was real cool to play one last year with my brothers, I’ve been playing with them since I was little.” <\/p>\n
For Del Valle, Nunez caught the touchdown. Gonzalez caught two touchdowns. <\/p>\n
