{"id":50498,"date":"2025-11-15T05:18:19","date_gmt":"2025-11-15T05:18:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/50498\/"},"modified":"2025-11-15T05:18:19","modified_gmt":"2025-11-15T05:18:19","slug":"after-ex-officers-acquitted-head-of-sapd-union-wants-chief-mcmanus-out-over-knee-jerk-reactions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/50498\/","title":{"rendered":"After ex-officers acquitted, head of SAPD union wants Chief McManus out over \u2018knee-jerk\u2019 reactions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">SAN ANTONIO \u2013 A week after three former San Antonio Police Department officers were acquitted in the 2023 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2025\/11\/10\/defense-rests-case-court-still-has-to-work-on-the-law-before-closing-arguments-in-ex-officers-trial\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2025\/11\/10\/defense-rests-case-court-still-has-to-work-on-the-law-before-closing-arguments-in-ex-officers-trial\/\">shooting death of Melissa Perez<\/a>, the president of a local police union wants to put a vote of no confidence forward at the union\u2019s next meeting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">San Antonio Police Officers\u2019 Association President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2025\/11\/11\/after-ex-sapd-officers-acquittal-police-union-and-defense-attorneys-call-for-accountability\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2025\/11\/11\/after-ex-sapd-officers-acquittal-police-union-and-defense-attorneys-call-for-accountability\/\">Danny Diaz<\/a> sent union members a letter citing Chief William McManus\u2019 \u201cknee-jerk\u201d reactions and \u201cpolitically motivated\u201d decisions in the arrests of officers the same day Melissa Perez was shot and killed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cThey should have been placed on administrative duty and they weren\u2019t,\u201d Diaz said. \u201cThey went directly to arresting them within 16 hours. That wasn\u2019t the right decision to do, so our members don\u2019t have confidence in the chief.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">After reaching out to SAPD for three days, the department sent KSAT the following emailed statement from McManus:<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cI recognize that this case has stirred strong emotions within the Department and the community. My decisions in this case were based on the specific circumstances involved. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cI consistently support officers when their use of force is within policy and the law, and I review these situations regularly. The steps taken in this case were not influenced by political pressure or external pressure of any kind. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cI will continue to work with SAPOA, as I have over the years, to address our differences in a way that supports both our officers and the community we serve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">SAPOA\u2019s directors will speak with union members over the next couple of weeks and decide on Dec. 11 if the union will put forward a vote of no confidence. If the union holds the vote, members will have a couple of weeks to vote in favor of or against the chief.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The results are non-binding, and the anticipated vote is separate from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/2016\/03\/24\/san-antonio-police-union-returns-no-confidence-vote-in-chief-mcmanus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/2016\/03\/24\/san-antonio-police-union-returns-no-confidence-vote-in-chief-mcmanus\/\">2016 vote of no confidence<\/a> in the chief. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The San Antonio Police Officers Association issued a vote of no confidence against the chief in 2016, with 97% of voting members disapproving of the chief.
