(November 16, 2025) – No.13 Lubbock Christian University stayed unbeaten behind a smothering second-half defensive surge and a career-matching night from Martie McCoy, pulling away for a 61–42 win over CSU Pueblo Sunday afternoon at the South Central Region Crossover inside Massari Arena. The Lady Chaps (4–0) extended their road winning streak to 11 straight, as the contest was their first true road game of the season.

Kennedy Chappell delivered her fourth straight double-figure outing with a balanced performance, while McCoy matched a career high with 16 points, opening 5-of-5 from the field and finishing 6-of-8 while drawing six fouls. LCU’s depth was on full display as 15 players logged at least three minutes, with freshmen Mattie Dollar and Kaelie Massenburg making their collegiate debuts and Taylor Thomas returning from last season’s injury.

CSU Pueblo (1–4) was held to 14-of-50 shooting (28.0%), including 0-for-11 from the field in the third quarter, when The Pack managed just four points. Seneya Martinez (12 points) and Genesis Sweetwine (10 points) led CSUP with modest offensive outputs, but the team could not withstand LCU’s defensive pressure or the Lady Chaps’ 21–4 third-quarter onslaught.

How It Happened

Lubbock Christian shook off a slow, turnover-heavy opening stretch by both teams and grabbed early control at the free-throw line for a 2–0 lead. After Colorado State Pueblo briefly surged ahead 3–2 on a Seneya Martinez three, the quarter shifted sharply. With the score tied 3–3 at the 5:56 mark, LCU ignited a dominant 13–2 run, fueled by turnovers they converted into transition points (LCU outscored CSUP 8-0 in points-off-turnovers in the opening quarter). Kennedy Chappell sparked the push with a fast-break layup and a pair of mid-range jumpers, while Martie McCoy added a three, a layup, and a hook shot to help LCU build a 15–5 advantage.

CSUP momentarily stopped the bleeding with a three from Genesis Sweetwine, but LCU answered immediately and closed the quarter on a 6–1 burst, highlighted by Chappell’s jumper off an inbounds with one second left to beat the horn. The Lady Chaps’ defensive pressure—forcing seven first-quarter turnovers—powered a 21–9 lead after one.

Lubbock Christian carried its defensive pressure straight into the second quarter, stretching the lead to 23–9 after Maddie Moyers opened the frame with a pair of free throws in the first 26 seconds. Colorado State Pueblo momentarily answered with a three, but LCU’s turnover pressure never let the ThunderWolves build momentum. A CSUP lost ball at 8:41 set up another Moyers free throw, and moments later Martie McCoy—perfect from the floor in the half—slashed in for a driving layup to restore a 14-point cushion.

CSUP found a brief spark midway through the quarter, trimming the margin to 10 on second-chance points and a contested jumper, but LCU countered immediately. McCoy pushed the pace again, assisting Meg Meekins’ wing three for a 29–16 lead, and after another CSP giveaway, Kennedy Chappell knocked down a transition jumper to push the margin back to double digits. Chappell closed the half with 12 points, while McCoy’s flawless 4-for-4 shooting added nine.

LCU’s ability to convert defensive pressure into offense defined the quarter. The Lady Chaps forced four CSUP turnovers in the period alone and held an 11–2 advantage in points off giveaways by halftime. Taylor Allen’s late right-wing three stretched the lead to 34–21 before a Sweetwine layup sent the game to the half with LCU leading 34-23.

Lubbock Christian broke the game open in the third quarter with a suffocating defensive stretch and a 14–0 run to close the period (part of a 19-2 scoring surge). Colorado State Pueblo went the entire quarter without a made field goal (0-for-11) and, combined with the final 1:37 of the second quarter, endured a 0-for-13 drought over a span of roughly 13 and a half minutes.

LCU quickly set the tone as Meg Meekins scored the first two baskets of the quarter, and Martie McCoy—who led the Lady Chaps with seven points in the frame—knocked down a transition three at the 5:08 mark to push the lead to 16. After a series of stops, turnovers, and transition layups, the Lady Chaps piled on with a fast-break finish from Kennedy Chappell and a layup by Tia Johnson.

Freshman Kyndle Cunningham delivered one of the quarter’s highlights, drilling her first collegiate three-pointer with 1:32 left, pushing the margin past 20 (50-27). Moments later, Maddie Moyers added a deep three from the left wing as LCU closed the quarter on a 14–0 burst for a 55-27 advantage.

LCU had 15 players play in the final quarter. They were plagued by seven turnovers, which allowed The Pack to have a 10-2 scoring advantage in points-off-turnovers in the period. Tia Johnson, Kimber Mathews and Moyers had LCU’s lone field goals of the frame, as LCU was outscored 15-6 in the quarter. LCU, shooting 11/22 (50%) from the field in the second half, was led in the half by McCoy with seven points.

Game Notes

» Kennedy Chappell has racked up double figures offensively in all four games this season.
