A man was arrested after hitting a woman who was jogging in Bob Woodruff Park with a hammer, police said.<\/p>\n
PLANO, Texas \u2014 Plano Police say a man armed with a hammer attacked a female jogger Thursday afternoon in Bob Woodruff Park. A suspect is now in custody, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is involved in the case, too.<\/p>\n
According to the Plano Police Department, officers responded to an assault call at Bob Woodruff Park in the 2300 block of Shiloh Road around 5 p.m. Police said a woman had been jogging in the park when a man attacked, striking her with a hammer multiple times.<\/p>\n
Police say the victim was able to fight off the attacker and he fled on foot. Officers arrested a suspect, later identified as Sergio Noe De Nova Duarte, 17, of Plano. He faces a charge of aggravated kidnapping bodily injury, a first-degree felony, and is being held at the Collin County Detention facility, according to officials.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The kidnapping charge, police say, is in part because the suspect had duct tape and attempted to use it on the victim after hitting her multiple times with a hammer. Based on evidence he left behind, and on the descriptions provided by multiple witnesses who saw the attack and watched the suspect flee on foot, Duarte was arrested at a home about four hours later.<\/p>\n
The Plano Police also tell WFAA that, while they have no prior incidents on record with Sergio Duarte, his fingerprints appeared in the computer systems of ICE. The agency has requested a hold on him after he is transported to the Collin County Detention Center.<\/p>\n
“Immigration informed us to place a hold on this individual, and that’s exactly what we did,” Andrae Smith with Plano Police told WFAA.<\/p>\n
The woman was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Plano PD said.<\/p>\n
“There are many other individuals who frequent this area. It’s fairly a safe place to be,” Smith added. “And why this individual chose our victim to this date, to this moment, we don’t know why.”<\/p>\n
