{"id":53600,"date":"2025-11-17T23:05:10","date_gmt":"2025-11-17T23:05:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/53600\/"},"modified":"2025-11-17T23:05:10","modified_gmt":"2025-11-17T23:05:10","slug":"fort-bend-isd-parent-shares-frustrations-amid-plan-to-rezone-schools","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/53600\/","title":{"rendered":"Fort Bend ISD parent shares frustrations amid plan to rezone schools"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">FORT BEND COUNTY, Texas \u2013 The Fort Bend ISD Board of Trustees will meet for its monthly board meeting Monday evening.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The meeting comes amid news that the district is preparing to redraw its school boundaries, a move that could shift students to different schools and potentially impact property values in the area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">While rezoning is not on the agenda for Monday\u2019s meeting, parents are expected to show up and speak during the public comment section of the meeting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">One parent, who says she is frustrated, is Tressy Garcia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">A Fort Bend ISD alum and mother of five, Garcia says her family has been rezoned three times in the past five years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cUnfortunately, our kids are not able to form a community because after elementary school, they are divided into two different middle schools. Now we are thinking about rezoning our middle schools and our neighborhoods to two different high schools,\u201d Garcia said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Garcia and her husband bought their Riverstone home in 2018. Within a year, they were rezoned. It\u2019s happened twice more since then.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cWe had to rent a home. This is in the COVID bubble years. We had to rent a home for one year and decide where we wanted to live so we wouldn\u2019t be rezoned again, keep the kids together, and now the rezoning is back on the table after having lived in our house for two years,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">She says the biggest stress isn\u2019t just where her kids will go, but how their daily routine would even work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cSo for me personally, I have rising 9th graders next year. And unfortunately, if we\u2019re rezoned high schools, that would mean that I would have one child at Elkins High School and two children at another high school. And I\u2019m not sure, because Fort Bend ISD has not been transparent in what their plans are, how the transportation would look for that,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">She also points to overcrowding at Elkins High School.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cWe currently have Elkins High School sitting at 112% capacity, and so they\u2019ve built 13 portables outside, which are not safe, which are not secure, and are really hard for the kids to get to,\u201d Garcia said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">KPRC 2 asked Garcia what questions she would like to ask the district.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cI would love to know why they continue to kick the can down the road, what is causing the delay in letting us know the boundary scenarios, and I\u2019d love to know why certain communities have always been targets of the rezoning, while others have stayed untouched,\u201d she responded.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The district says draft boundary scenarios won\u2019t be released until January 2026, with time for families to give feedback before any recommendations go to the Board in the spring. District leaders were not available for an interview Monday, but released this statement:<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Fort Bend ISD is committed to ensuring every student learns in an environment that is safe, supportive and designed for long-term success. As FBISD enrollment begins to stabilize across the district, we are conducting a long-range boundary planning process. This is a multi-year planning process designed to balance enrollment across our campuses over time. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">We are committed to a transparent process that includes meaningful input from our families, staff, students, and community members.
