CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas \u2014 Corpus Christi officials have begun the process of filling a vacancy on the city\u2019s Planning Commission after Vice Chair Brian Mandel resigned Thursday amid felony charges in Louisville.<\/p>\n
Mandel had served on the commission for the past five years. His resignation came after a Jefferson County grand jury indicted him last week on allegations that he sent threatening text messages to University of Louisville head football coach Jeff Brohm, Brohm\u2019s family and quarterback Miller Moss.<\/p>\n
According to court documents provided to 3NEWS, Mandel was indicted on six counts of second-degree terroristic threatening and one count of criminal attempt theft by extortion over $10,000. The threats were allegedly made Nov. 8 and 9. University of Louisville President John R. Karman III said the threats were sent through text messages and confirmed that Mandel lives in Corpus Christi.<\/p>\n
A family spokesperson told 3NEWS that Mandel traveled to Louisville on Tuesday evening to meet with University Police. Karman said he was arrested later that night. Court records show Mandel was arraigned Wednesday, and his next court date is scheduled for Feb. 17, 2026. The content of the messages has not been released.<\/p>\n
With Mandel\u2019s resignation now in effect, City Manager Peter Zanoni said the city secretary\u2019s office will begin advertising the vacancy and preparing for a new appointment.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe city council, working with the city secretary, will advertise for the vacancy to be filled,\u201d Zanoni said. \u201cUltimately, city council will replace Mr. Mandel with another planning commission appointee. The full council approves it, and so probably in these upcoming months \u2014 I would say January, February \u2014 we could expect to see a reappointment to that vacancy.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Planning Commission reviews zoning cases, development proposals and long-range land-use recommendations. All members are appointed by the City Council.<\/p>\n
