Last week, the CCISD school board approved a new targeted improvement plan for Yeager Elementary.<\/p>\n
Kelise Morris, CCISD assistant superintendent for school leadership, said the plans begin with assessing individual campus needs.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe’re going to look at attendance, we’re going to look at survey feedback, and really get down to what is the root cause and then what are the strategies and systems we need to put in place,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Morris said several campuses have seen major progress, but because the plans run for multiple years, they\u2019re still required to stay in the process.<\/p>\n
\u201cShaw Elementary and Yeager Elementary, they both grew double letter grades. So they\u2019ve shown improvements but are still going through that school improvement process,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Morris said the plans are designed to help students and staff \u2014 but if campuses don\u2019t improve, there are consequences.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf a campus cannot successfully exit, there\u2019s going to be additional support that’s going to be needed and additional monitoring,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
CCISD school board member Alice Upshaw-Hawkins said the district is still dealing with attendance issues.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf you are not in your chair when the class starts you miss so much more,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Upshaw-Hawkins said the district is also working to close reading and math gaps \u2014 fundamental skills she said students can\u2019t cut corners on.<\/p>\n
\u201cReading is the bulk of the test.
