Nueces County hunting for new restaurant contractor at Bob Hall Pier<\/a><\/p>\nCounty Commissioner Brent Chesney said Tuesday that the contractor will miss the 460-day deadline written into the agreement but emphasized that progress continues.<\/p>\n
According to Chesney, “They indicated to us because some of the beams for the end of the pier which are massive concrete precast beams are not ready yet from the manufacturer. So, we’re going to be a little bit behind, but it’s moving along it’s getting done.”<\/p>\n
Liquidated damages or financial penalties for missing deadlines are included in the contract. However, Chesney said the county’s priority is seeing construction completed.<\/p>\n
“You’ve got snags and hurdles in every project. I wish it was perfect, but it’s going to get complete and done,” said Chesney.<\/p>\n
Surfers and frequent visitors to Padre Island are also keeping an eye on the progress. At Dockside Surf Shop in Flour Bluff, longtime surfer Tippy Kelley said the delay won’t stop loyal beachgoers from returning.<\/p>\n
“There are people that surf Bob Hall all their lives, as soon as that thing is finished, they’ll be back out at Bob Hall no matter what.”<\/p>\n
Kelley added that the rebuild will benefit far more than surfers, it will help fishermen and visitors as well.<\/p>\n
A separate project to construct a new restaurant using the existing building next to the pier is also expected to begin soon.<\/p>\n
Chesney said, “That’s about a seven- to nine-month build. The restaurant has always been behind the pier because of funding, that is staying on track as well. We got a little behind on that too because the contractor that we have on the pier decided they didn’t want to build the restaurant, so we had to regroup, find some additional funds for that,” said Chesney.<\/p>\n
As for choosing who will operate the new restaurant, Chesney said the process will be competitive.<\/p>\n
“It’s up to the Parks board to send out that RFP or RFQ so everyone gets a fair shot, and everybody gets a fair opportunity.”<\/p>\n
The full project also includes rebuilding the parking lot and access road\u2014features Chesney said the county fought hard to include.<\/p>\n
