{"id":56217,"date":"2025-11-19T14:45:37","date_gmt":"2025-11-19T14:45:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/56217\/"},"modified":"2025-11-19T14:45:37","modified_gmt":"2025-11-19T14:45:37","slug":"balcones-heights-substance-abuse-treatment-facility-opens-doors-to-women-for-first-time-following-major-remodel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/56217\/","title":{"rendered":"Balcones Heights substance abuse treatment facility opens doors to women for first time following major remodel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">SAN ANTONIO \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifetimerecoverytx.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.lifetimerecoverytx.org\/\">Lifetime Recovery<\/a> has completed an $18 million renovation of its century-old Southton facility, expanding capacity and adding services the nonprofit says will bring dignity and privacy to people in treatment for substance abuse.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The remodeling and campus expansion created 154 beds and opened the program to women for the first time, officials said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Counseling offices are more private, and the space around the building appears \u201cpeaceful and dignified,\u201d according to alumni who toured the facility.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Hamilton Barton, an alumnus who is now the nonprofit\u2019s chief sustainability officer, says the need for support is ongoing, \u201cbut somebody\u2019s got to help. No money, no mission.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Barton, who was in the program in 2012 and 2013, recalled an enclosed corridor that staff once jokingly called \u201cskid row.\u201d He said he sometimes slept in the corridor and that the building was \u201cnot great\u201d then, with stained ceilings and drafts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Even in disrepair, he said, it was \u201ca step up\u201d and \u201ca roof over our head.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Treatment at Lifetime Recovery costs more than $300 a day, officials said. The residential portion of the program requires about $2.5 million a year to operate, and the nonprofit has launched the Lifetime Recovery Promise Scholarship Fund to help people who want treatment but can\u2019t afford it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cThere are plenty of options if you have resources,\u201d Lifetime Recovery CEO David Phipps said. \u201cIf you do not have insurance, if you do not have financials, if you do not have family support, where are you going to go? So therefore, we are the spot that helps with that in Bexar County. And South Texas, we draw from around as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Alumni such as Barton say they trust the care provided.
