And we know rats can go where they find food. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">But this report from Terminix says there is a rat uprising in houses, too, in both new construction and old, wherever the rat burglars find holes to break in.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">&#8220;They love areas where they\u2019re not bothered, like attics, crawl spaces, storage units, drawers,&#8221; said Higgins.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">And it&#8217;s the long hot summers and mild winters that have them settling in and starting families.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">&#8220;They live longer, so they\u2019re producing 6\u20138 pups per litter more often,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p> Preventing and addressing costly critters <\/p>\n<p original-article-post=\"\" origination_station=\"KRIV\" data-v-ec26887a=\"\" data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">Why you should care:<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">They can do serious damage, like gnawing on wood and wiring. And, rats, do they love the attic! \u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">&#8220;They can do damage to your insulation. Rodents love to nest there, they have litters there. So they can damage it through their saliva, their urine, their feces,&#8221; said Higgins.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">Rats can carry Hantavirus, which can be deadly. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p original-article-post=\"\" origination_station=\"KRIV\" data-v-ec26887a=\"\" data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">What you can do:<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">You can set out snap traps with a little peanut butter or chocolate syrup. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">But professionals really recommend, well, calling a professional. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">&#8220;We can remove contaminated insulation, we can sanitize the entire attic, we can blow in new insulation,&#8221; said Higgins, showing us some insulation called TAP, that contains pesticide.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">&#8220;You&#8217;ve got Thermal Acoustical Pest control, and it\u2019s just pest control insulation infused with boric acid,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">Not gonna lie, removing and replacing insulation can cost thousands of dollars.<\/p>\n<p original-article-post=\"\" origination_station=\"KRIV\" data-v-ec26887a=\"\" data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">Big picture view:<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">Prevention is key. \u00a0Look for signs like rodent droppings, teeth marks, and noises in the night.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">&#8220;When you hear a rustling in the walls or in the attic, you hear sounds like two things fighting, rustling or thumping.
