Punk Roots Right Here in West Texas<\/p>\n
Many people assume punk belongs to either the coasts or gritty industrial cities \u2014 but Lubbock has always had an anti-establishment spirit simmering beneath the dust and tumbleweeds. Decades ago, one of our radio salesmen actually booked both Green Day and The Offspring here before either band exploded. Only one show actually happened, but the bragging rights live on forever.<\/p>\n
Long before that, Lubbock was already on the national radar thanks to The Rox, a famed club that welcomed some of punk and proto-punk\u2019s biggest icons: The Clash, Talking Heads, 999, The Cramps, and even U2 back when they still carried a punk label. Not many mid-size Texas cities can say that.<\/p>\n
Lubbock also built its own punk identity, producing bands including 80\u2019s Combat, The Rouges, The Nelsons, The Virgils, and countless others who kept the flame lit even when the mainstream ignored it. Punk works here because it sounds like us \u2014 loud, stubborn, weird, rebellious, and proudly out of step with the world\u2019s expectations.<\/p>\n
