{"id":57221,"date":"2025-11-20T04:39:15","date_gmt":"2025-11-20T04:39:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/57221\/"},"modified":"2025-11-20T04:39:15","modified_gmt":"2025-11-20T04:39:15","slug":"judge-blocks-texas-mandate-for-ten-commandments-to-be-displayed-in-classrooms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/57221\/","title":{"rendered":"Judge blocks Texas mandate for Ten Commandments to be displayed in classrooms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"text | article-text\">TYLER, Texas (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kltv.com\/2025\/11\/19\/judge-halts-texas-ten-commandments-law-ag-paxton-appeals-sues-school-districts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.kltv.com\/2025\/11\/19\/judge-halts-texas-ten-commandments-law-ag-paxton-appeals-sues-school-districts\/\">KLTV<\/a>\/Gray News) &#8211; A Texas law that requires schools to display the Ten Commandments is being challenged in court. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">A federal judge has temporarily blocked a mandate for public schools in Texas to display the Ten Commandments in classrooms. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">State Attorney General Ken Paxton is appealing the federal judge\u2019s decision, so future court proceedings will determine whether the law stands. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The judge\u2019s decision comes as Paxton is suing three school districts for not complying with state law.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Paxton has filed lawsuits against Galveston, Leander and Round Rock school districts for failing to display the Ten Commandments in accordance with current state law. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Two of the lawsuits state that the school districts received donated posters of the Ten Commandments, but each delayed hanging them as arguments of the law proceeded in federal court.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Senate Bill 10 was signed into law by Gov. Greg Abbott in late June of this year, just one day after a similar law in Louisiana was deemed unconstitutional. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The law took effect on Sept. 1, requiring schools to accept posters or framed copies of the Ten Commandments and display them \u201cin a conspicuous place\u201d in classrooms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Supporters say the Ten Commandments\u2019 teachings are a cornerstone of American law, while those in opposition argue mandating the display is a violation of the First Amendment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">A federal appeals court will hear the state\u2019s arguments against the ruling next year. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit will hear both Texas\u2019 case and a similar case playing out in Louisiana in January. <\/p>\n<p class=\"copyright |\">Copyright 2025 KLTV via Gray Local Media, Inc.
