There are tables at certain<br \/>\n                           coffee shops she\u2019s claimed as her \u201cusual spot.\u201d She contributes to a law journal.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But peeling back the layers to her story, there is nothing average about how she got<br \/>\n                           to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ttu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Texas Tech University<\/a>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.depts.ttu.edu\/law\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">School of Law<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If you visit her Instagram, you\u2019ll see glamorous headshots of the law student adorned<br \/>\n                           with evening gowns and diamond necklaces. You\u2019ll notice an image of a fierce and determined<br \/>\n                           young woman fixing a crown atop her head. You\u2019ll see her posing on magazine covers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>                        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Headshot.jpg\" alt=\"Annette Addo-Yobo\"\/>Annette Addo-Yobo<\/p>\n<p>One could quickly assume she\u2019s lived an easy life \u2013 recently sweetened by winning<br \/>\n                           Miss Texas 2024.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And while parts of Annette\u2019s life certainly have been sweet, little of it came easy.<br \/>\n                           She developed a dogged determination early in life as a caretaker of a sibling with<br \/>\n                           autism spectrum disorder. Annette stepped up again when Lewy Body Dementia seized<br \/>\n                           her mother too early.<\/p>\n<p>Annette remembers her mother as someone who loved helping others, who had tremendous<br \/>\n                           love for her family and never gave up when life dealt a harsh hand.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s this same drive to make others\u2019 lives better that pushes Annette.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>                        Self-Made<\/p>\n<p>Life thrusted responsibility onto Annette early on. Her family moved from Ghana to<br \/>\n                           the U.S. to Canada and eventually back to the U.S. to settle in Texas all before she<br \/>\n                           turned 12. This made friendships hard to keep. Luckily, Annette became an older sister<br \/>\n                           and had built in friends.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Her brother Andrew came first.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>                        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Annette-and-brother-Andrew.jpg\" alt=\"Annette and brother Andrew\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Annette-and-Adelia.jpg\" alt=\"Annette and her sister, Adelia. \"\/>Annette with her brother, Andrew, and sister, Adelia.<\/p>\n<p>For a while, everything seemed normal. But as certain milestones arrived and Andrew<br \/>\n                           didn\u2019t respond the way doctors hoped, he was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder,<br \/>\n                           an extreme case in which he was nonverbal. While this was a crushing diagnosis, Annette<br \/>\n                           was young enough that she knew nothing different. Out of everyone in the family, she<br \/>\n                           thrived at \u201cspeaking Andrew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew how to tell if he was making a joke or if he was upset or hungry or thirsty,\u201d<br \/>\n                           Annette says.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She naturally fell into the role of advocate.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Then Adelia, her younger sister, arrived. While Adelia has gone on to thrive, she<br \/>\n                           had a major speech delay early in life and didn\u2019t begin talking until she was 5.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While her parents were hands on with all their children, Annette couldn\u2019t help but<br \/>\n                           assume the role of caretaker with her siblings. From making sure they were safe at<br \/>\n                           school to learning to read behavioral cues, helping Andrew and Adelia brought Annette<br \/>\n                           a genuine sense of joy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But in 2015, her role as caretaker expanded with no warning.<\/p>\n<p>The family was on vacation when Annette\u2019s mother began experiencing abnormal tingling<br \/>\n                           in her hands and feet. She struggled through the trip, attempting to stay present<br \/>\n                           despite splitting headaches. The family assumed it was just jetlag. But the symptoms<br \/>\n                           only intensified upon returning home to Dallas. Headaches grew to hallucinations,<br \/>\n                           then to heart conditions, and ultimately, the loss of basic functions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo one could figure out what was happening to her,\u201d Annette says.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>                        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Annette-and-her-mother.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/>Annette with her mother. <\/p>\n<p>She visited doctor after doctor; Annette\u2019s father went as far as traveling to England<br \/>\n                           to obtain medication that might help. Nothing soothed her symptoms.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In 2021, her mother passed away. The family finally received answers \u2013 it had been<br \/>\n                           Lewy Body Dementia, a diagnosis only discoverable postmortem.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPrior to her terminal illness, she loved her job as a teacher, taking walks in the<br \/>\n                           neighborhood and cooking,\u201d Annette says. \u201cAt her core, she enjoyed serving others.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>                        Miss Texas<\/p>\n<p>When Annette began college at the University of Texas at Dallas, she pursued an education<br \/>\n                           in psychology and child learning and development. This was a natural extension of<br \/>\n                           her passions. She had chosen UT-Dallas to stay close when her mother was ill. But<br \/>\n                           since her mother\u2019s passing and her father getting more help with Andrew, Annette finally<br \/>\n                           felt she could focus on her future.<\/p>\n<p>She enrolled at Sam Houston State University to study clinical psychology.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI worked with at-risk youth potentially facing incarceration,\u201d she explains. \u201cI screened<br \/>\n                           for intellectual disabilities to inform legal representation. This helped attorneys<br \/>\n                           know whether treatment or incarceration was the appropriate path for the defendant.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While fulfilling, the work was draining. Annette cried every evening when she got<br \/>\n                           home.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was too emotionally invested in the work,\u201d she says.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Annette transitioned away from clinical work and pursued a Master of Business Administration<br \/>\n                           at Lamar University. This prepared her for a position with the Dallas Regional Chamber<br \/>\n                           which immediately was a better fit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hated clinical research,\u201d she admits with a laugh. \u201cIt taught me skills about research<br \/>\n                           and writing that I\u2019m finding valuable now. But as much as I found science intriguing,<br \/>\n                           it just wasn\u2019t the career for me.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Annette observed several business models while sitting in on meetings during her time<br \/>\n                           with the chamber. From small local businesses to Blue Cross Blue Shield to the Texas<br \/>\n                           Rangers, there was one thing each client had in common: They often brought an attorney<br \/>\n                           to meetings, including their insights.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She especially loved working with the Dallas Mavericks, as she\u2019s a diehard basketball<br \/>\n                           fan.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>                        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Annette-and-Dallas-Mavericks-Center-Anthony-Davis.jpg\" alt=\"Annette with Dallas Mavericks center, Anthony Davis\"\/>Annette with Dallas Mavericks center, Anthony Davis<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI grew up thinking attorneys are just in the courtroom,\u201d she says. \u201cI didn\u2019t realize<br \/>\n                           they\u2019re also in the community and helping businesses and nonprofits make an impact.<br \/>\n                           Seeing that in action was so cool.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s when the idea of law school began to take root.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>No business Annette interacted with went without legal representation. It was a vital<br \/>\n                           part of helping a business achieve its mission. The hours of reading in law school<br \/>\n                           didn\u2019t intimidate Annette since she\u2019d done a large amount of reading and writing while<br \/>\n                           working in research.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But there was one major obstacle \u2013 tuition.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Annette knew the law schools she applied to would offer scholarships, but she\u2019d need<br \/>\n                           something major to justify a fourth degree. She recalled a young woman named Averie<br \/>\n                           Bishop who she followed on social media. Averie had recently made history as the first<br \/>\n                           Asian American to become Miss Texas. She offered online workshops in which she discussed<br \/>\n                           her experience, the professional and personal development she gained, and the scholarship<br \/>\n                           dollars she earned toward her own legal education.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAverie\u2019s life experiences were similar to mine,\u201d Annette says. \u201cShe encouraged me<br \/>\n                           and empowered me to give it a try.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>What followed was a year of interviews, public speaking and social impact initiatives.<br \/>\n                           For Annette, that last part was easy. She made autism safety and awareness the focus<br \/>\n                           of her platform, sharing her story of caring for Andrew.<\/p>\n<p>                        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Volunteering.jpg\" alt=\"Annette Volunteering\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/In-interviews.jpg\" alt=\"Interviews\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Annette-speaking-about-autism.jpg\" alt=\"Speaking about autism\"\/><\/p>\n<p>In 2023, she was crowned Miss Southlake at a regional competition. This was a pivotal<br \/>\n                           point, as contestants for Miss Texas must win at a local level first. As the competition<br \/>\n                           turned more serious going into 2024, Annette told her boss at the chamber she\u2019d need<br \/>\n                           to step away to make more time for traveling.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d told him what I was doing when I first began the journey, but I never imagined<br \/>\n                           it impacting work,\u201d Annette says. \u201cI didn\u2019t think I was going to win.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But by the time Annette made it to the preliminaries, her colleagues back at the Dallas<br \/>\n                           Chamber were putting together a watch party. They even ordered a yellow cake to match<br \/>\n                           the stunning yellow silk evening gown Annette donned for the final.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As the evening of June 29 arrived, Annette took the stage at the Eisemann Center in<br \/>\n                           Dallas along with four other finalists. As the contestants made their way through<br \/>\n                           personal interviews and talent presentations, it came down to two finalists: Annette<br \/>\n                           and Chloe Burke from Houston, Texas.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As the emcee announced Chloe as the first runner up, viewers could see the shock of<br \/>\n                           realization roll over Annette. Her determination had paid off.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>                        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Annette-realizing-she-won.jpg\" alt=\"Annette realizing she'd won. \"\/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Being-crowned.jpg\" alt=\"Being Crowned\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The newly crowned Miss Texas went to sleep that night with roughly 800 followers on<br \/>\n                           her Instagram account. The next morning, she woke up to 28,000.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cActress Viola Davis had posted the video of my crowning,\u201d Annette says. \u201cAt first<br \/>\n                           I thought it had to be a spam account, but it wasn\u2019t.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Davis, along with other prominent female public figures, were cheering on the first<br \/>\n                           Ghanaian winner of the title. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Miss Texas crown is much bigger than me,\u201d Annette says. \u201cThis crown is for every<br \/>\n                           young child on the spectrum who felt alienated, abandoned, stereotyped or unseen because<br \/>\n                           of their different abilities. This crown is for the young immigrant girls who were<br \/>\n                           caregivers before they were students, friends or teammates.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis crown is for those who dare to be different.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>                        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Annette-with-arms-in-air.jpg\" alt=\"Annette with arms in the air\"\/><\/p>\n<p>                        From Stage to Podium<\/p>\n<p>Annette secured a large scholarship from the Miss Texas pageant that will pay her<br \/>\n                           way through the first two years of law school. With funding in hand, there was just<br \/>\n                           one thing left to do \u2013 decide where to apply.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In line with her usual thoroughness, Annette applied to several law schools and had<br \/>\n                           options when it came time to choose. With affordability taken care of, she looked<br \/>\n                           at which schools gave her the most opportunity.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTexas Tech\u2019s School of Law provides a wealth of opportunities for law students, especially<br \/>\n                           first-year students,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>Only three months in, Annette has already become a finalist and top oralist in the<br \/>\n                           1L Negotiations competition, a contributing writer for the Texas Bank Lawyer, and<br \/>\n                           she is the events chair for the Sport and Entertainment Law Society.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do not know of many law schools providing these kinds of opportunities for first-year<br \/>\n                           students,\u201d Annette says. \u201cThis sets Texas Tech apart in a great way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>                        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Competition-team-at-Texas-Tech-Law.jpg\" alt=\"Competition Team at Texas Tech's School of Law\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Annette has demonstrated a remarkable work ethic that\u2019s been noticeable to faculty.<br \/>\n                           Professor of Law <a href=\"https:\/\/www.depts.ttu.edu\/law\/faculty\/d_benham.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Dustin Benham<\/a> has Annette in his civil procedures course this fall.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy class has a lot of engagement and that\u2019s an area in which Annette thrives,\u201d he<br \/>\n                           says.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Benham believes all lawyers must be great communicators, whether they\u2019re in the courtroom<br \/>\n                           or not. He suspects Annette\u2019s experience in the Miss Texas competition prepared her<br \/>\n                           for the challenges of law school.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt Texas Tech\u2019s School of Law, we admit students we believe will succeed,\u201d he says.<br \/>\n                           \u201cA big part of that is demonstrated academic ability. But another aspect is prior<br \/>\n                           experience. Annette is a great example. She has had to hone her communication skills,<br \/>\n                           demonstrate grit and has collected several skills that serve her now in law school.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When Annette began dreaming of attending law school, she imagined practicing an area<br \/>\n                           of law that would allow her to advocate for policies affecting people like her brother.<br \/>\n                           Since learning about different practices of law, Annette has realized she wants to<br \/>\n                           save her pro bono work for the causes closest to her heart.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEventually, I will be Andrew\u2019s primary caretaker, and I want to get a good job so<br \/>\n                           I can financially support him,\u201d she says.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She wants to leave the advocacy work she does for individuals on the spectrum at that<br \/>\n                           \u2013 advocacy work.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love doing it; I think if it became my career and someone paid me to do it, I would<br \/>\n                           burn out,\u201d Annette says.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Rather, she is considering working in sports and entertainment law. After winning<br \/>\n                           Miss Texas, several brands began reaching out to Annette and offered brand deals,<br \/>\n                           social media partnerships and some opportunities she\u2019d never even heard of. Luckily,<br \/>\n                           the former Miss Texas helped Annette through the process and taught her to read contracts<br \/>\n                           carefully.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>                        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Winners-headshot.jpg\" alt=\"Winner's Headshot\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlenty of times she had to tell me, \u2018You\u2019re worth way more than that. Ask for more,\u2019\u201d<br \/>\n                           Annette recalls. \u201cIt got me thinking, a lot of college athletes are getting brand<br \/>\n                           deals, but they don\u2019t all have attorneys helping them.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Annette wants to ensure athletes understand what comes with commercializing their<br \/>\n                           likeness and reputation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love sports, especially college sports. I watch March Madness every year and make<br \/>\n                           a bracket. I won the whole thing when I worked at the Dallas Chamber,\u201d she remembers,<br \/>\n                           smiling.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But the first-year law student reserves the right to change her mind.
