The disease is almost always fatal once symptoms begin, making prevention crucial for public safety.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Since the bats were discovered, Lubbock health officials are urging residents to avoid any wild mammal, including skunks, foxes and coyotes. These animals are most likely to carry the disease.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">If residents see a bat, health officials specifically recommend keeping children and pets away from the animal and calling animal control immediately. If a bat has contact with a pet or family member, animal control will coordinate testing for free.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Officials also encourage residents to ensure their pets\u2019 rabies vaccinations are up-to-date as an additional precautionary measure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"copyright |\">Copyright 2025 KCBD.
