When people ask me who my comedic influences are, I put my hand up and say, \u201cHere\u2019s my top 5: Richard Pryor, Steve Martin, Gilda Radner, Adam Sandler and Chris Farley.\u201d<\/p>\n
You\u2019ve mentioned on your socials that you love traveling for stand-up. What is your favorite place you\u2019ve ever been, and how do you find commonality going between LA, the Maldives or even places like Plano?<\/p>\n
Traveling is something I\u2019ve been fortunate enough to do ever since I was a little girl, so I\u2019ve been absorbing and observing for as long as I can remember, but ultimately, it\u2019s all about connection: researching about the city, exploring the culture, talking to locals to better understand even just a little deeper, but ultimately, humor is universal and the more relatable you can be, the more comedy can resonate. My performance in the Maldives was by happenstance! I was on this trip to Dubai and the Maldives with my mom and 15 other women between the ages of 50-74. I was the youngest (still am!) and they all caught wind of me being a stand-up comedian, so they asked me to perform. It was night 7 of our trip and night 2 in the Maldives, so I had gotten to know them a little bit by that point. I did a 25-minute set, barefoot with no microphone and mediocre lighting against a Maldivian night sky backdrop. Honestly, it\u2019s one of my favorite experiences till this day, and just proves that you can perform anywhere people will listen.<\/p>\n
What was your recent experience on Abbott Elementary like? How does that style of comedy differ from your own?<\/p>\n
My comedy style is similar to Abbott\u2019s\u2013playful, witty and authentic. It\u2019s a real treat to work on a show that you love and appreciate comedically. I\u2019ve been working on the show as Lisa Ann Walter\u2019s stand-in since Season 2. During Season 4, I booked the role of \u201cLeah Smalls\u201d and got to work closely with Janelle James, who plays Principal \u201cAva Coleman.\u201d Since I knew the cast and crew, it only made the experience that much more special. The episode was written by Kate Peterman and the directorial debut for Brittani Nichols. I\u2019ve always admired and respected their work, so honestly, it felt like a dream come true to bring \u201cLeah Smalls\u201d to life on this episode. I trust the comedy so much on this show, so it felt very natural to step in and play, and it is SUCH a fun sandbox to play in!<\/p>\n
Is there anything I haven\u2019t asked about that you want Plano residents to know before your show?<\/p>\n
This is my 2nd time in Texas, but 1st time in Plano. I\u2019m a BIG foodie! WHERE SHOULD I EAT?? I want Plano residents to know I\u2019m in NEED of food recs! I love all foods, especially BBQ, Dim Sum and Donuts. I\u2019m a donut Queen.
