Gibson had accumulated 529 rushing yards and five touchdowns in 19 games as a Longhorn, operating primarily in a short-yardage role. Stone appeared in 47 games, almost exclusively as a kickoff specialist.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Sarkisian explained that the move was brought about in part because of the influence of the redshirt rule. Players can appear in up to four games in any particular season and remain eligible for a redshirt, so long as they haven’t previously taken one. Both Stone and Gibson had appeared in four games in 2025, meaning another appearance would burn their redshirt and cost them a season of eligibility.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In the era of revenue sharing and NIL, burning a redshirt season carries financial consequences. An extra season of eligibility presents players with an extra opportunity to earn money.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Sarkisian has advocated for a rule change to eliminate the redshirt entirely, and instead give every player five years of collegiate eligibility, thus removing the incentive to, as he put it, opt out.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“I think it\u2019s a terrible position to put these players in to make these decisions right now,” he said. “There\u2019s money involved. There\u2019s revenue sharing. There\u2019s NIL. There\u2019s different factors. I think it\u2019s putting agents and family members and student-athletes in a difficult position to make business decisions in the middle of the season. That\u2019s where we\u2019re at.<\/p>\n

“One happened to be a senior who hadn\u2019t redshirted, and so he\u2019s trying to preserve a redshirt year. One is a true sophomore that played as a true freshman that\u2019s trying to preserve three years of eligibility. I understand all that.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

Sarkisian also indicated that he would support the SEC increasing its football scholarship limit, which currently sits at 85 players, to help his team stock up more depth. Last year’s House settlement allows for up to 105 scholarships at each program\u00a0with the removal of walk-ons, but\u00a0the SEC has not yet adopted that policy.\u00a0<\/p>\n

On the field, Sarkisian said he expects a collection of running backs to absorb Gibson’s short-yardage duties, rather than designating a single short-yardage back. “When a player asks to do that, I thank them for their time and I wish them the best of luck,” Sarkisian said. “What else are we supposed to do at that juncture? These are the rules that we\u2019ve put in place and so we\u2019ve got to operate within the parameters of the rules.”\u00a0<\/p>\n
