Did you know that the Lubbock Police Department (LPD) actually has a Mounted Patrol Unit<\/a>? You have Nellie, Tanner, Jobe, Smokey, and\u2014my favorite\u2014Jiggs.<\/p>\n What do Mounted Patrol Officers Do?<\/p>\n As fun as it is to think about mounted officers running down criminals on horseback with a lasso, the truth is that the Mounted Patrol Unit typically assists with area searches<\/a> and city event patrolling rather than full-on shootouts.<\/p>\n When it comes to animals on the front lines, that’s better suited for the K-9 unit<\/a> with highly trained dogs instead of horses serving as large targets in gunfights.<\/p>\n The Mounted Unit also participates in community events<\/a> like National Night Out, Foster Kids Birthday Bash, and the ABC Pro Rodeo, to name a few.<\/p>\n Read More:\u00a0What to Know About Neighborhood Watch Groups in Lubbock, TX<\/a><\/p>\n Each officer who serves in the Mounted Patrol Unit also holds other full-time positions in the department. Unfortunately, patrolling the streets on horseback is not a full-time gig.<\/p>\n In fact, each officer, just like in the K-9 unit, is fully responsible for their animal (feeding and daily care).<\/p>\n So, the next time you see a mounted officer in Lubbock, enjoy the moment!
