{"id":63151,"date":"2025-11-24T18:35:09","date_gmt":"2025-11-24T18:35:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/63151\/"},"modified":"2025-11-24T18:35:09","modified_gmt":"2025-11-24T18:35:09","slug":"dallas-appeals-court-for-now-halts-discovery-in-gateway-church-defamation-lawsuit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/63151\/","title":{"rendered":"Dallas appeals court, for now, halts discovery in Gateway Church defamation lawsuit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">A Dallas-based appeals court has sided with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/topic\/gateway-church\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/topic\/gateway-church\/\">Gateway Church<\/a>, allowing for discovery to be temporarily halted in a defamation suit against the church.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">The lawsuit, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/faith\/2025\/06\/12\/robert-morris-accuser-sues-him-gateway-church-alleging-defamation-over-past-statements\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/faith\/2025\/06\/12\/robert-morris-accuser-sues-him-gateway-church-alleging-defamation-over-past-statements\/\">filed in June by Cindy Clemishire<\/a>, a woman who accused Gateway\u2019s founder Robert Morris of sexually abusing her when she was a child, alleged Morris, the church and its elders defamed her by referring to her in statements as a \u201cyoung lady\u201d and conspired to cover up the abuse. After a Dallas County judge denied the church\u2019s request to dismiss the lawsuit, Gateway <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/courts\/2025\/11\/19\/gateway-church-files-appeal-asks-again-for-morris-accusers-defamation-suit-to-be-tossed\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/courts\/2025\/11\/19\/gateway-church-files-appeal-asks-again-for-morris-accusers-defamation-suit-to-be-tossed\/\">filed an appeal on Nov. 14 with the Fifth Court of Appeals<\/a>, asking the court to halt discovery in the case. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">The order, filed Friday, grants the request by halting all court proceedings in the case. In a response, Clemishire\u2019s lawyers said further discovery was warranted, since internal communications already obtained showed Gateway elders and other staff members knew about the abuse before it became public.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Morris, 64, is serving a six-month jail sentence in Osage County, Okla., <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/video\/2025\/10\/02\/robert-morris-gateway-church-founder-pleads-guilty-to-child-sex-abuse-charges\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/video\/2025\/10\/02\/robert-morris-gateway-church-founder-pleads-guilty-to-child-sex-abuse-charges\/\">after he pleaded guilty last month<\/a> to five counts of lewd or indecent acts to a child in the county. As part of his plea deal, he was given a 10-year suspended sentence, required to pay Clemishire $270,000 in restitution and is required to register as a sex offender for life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Clemishire, now 55, first publicly accused Morris last year of abusing her for about four-and-a-half years in the 1980s, beginning when she was 12 years old.
