In 2021, GAF Energy leased the South San Jose building as a prelude to creating a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mercurynews.com\/2021\/09\/28\/solar-roof-factory-bay-area-real-estate-green-energy-job-san-jose\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">solar-oriented manufacturing hub<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"GAF Energy solar components manufacturing and research center, showing a residential structure frame. The complex is located at 5981 Optical Ct. in south San Jose.\u00a0GAF Energy<\/p>\n<p>The company, which makes shingles integrated with solar panels, told the state EDD that it would permanently close the facility at 5981 Optical Court around Dec. 31.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn light of ongoing changes in the solar industry, we are aligning our business and our team to focus on key markets where solar is most compelling for builders and homeowners,\u201d a GAF Energy spokesperson said in an email the company sent to this news organization.<\/p>\n<p>A wide range of GAF Energy units will move from San Jose to a suburb of Austin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe changes we are making include centralizing all operations, manufacturing, and research &amp; development at our headquarters in Georgetown, Texas to drive efficiencies, foster stronger collaboration and partnership among teams, and better serve customers,\u201d the GAF Energy spokesperson stated.<\/p>\n<p>In 2021, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mercurynews.com\/2021\/05\/11\/solar-maker-hundreds-jobs-san-jose-green-energy-economy-real-estate\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">GAF Energy predicted it would employ about 250 to 300 people<\/a> at the South San Jose site once it ramped up hiring.
