Sun Devil Men\u2019s Basketball defeated Hawai’i, 83-76, on Thursday night at the Stan Sheriff Center. Arizona State (4-1) passed their first road test of the season, handing Hawai’i (4-2) their first home loss of the season (previously 4-0). The Maroon and Gold exploded for 49 points in the second half against a team that came into the game allowing only 61 points per game, a Top-25 total nationally.<\/p>\n

Arizona State has been one of the best teams in the nation at taking care of the basketball. Through five games, they ranke 22nd nationally and 2nd in the Big 12 in turnover margin (+2.2). They committ only 10 turnovers per game, a Top-50 total nationally. A big reason behind their comeback win over Hawai’i was a two-turnover effort in the second half. ASU only committed eight total.<\/p>\n
Sun Devil point guard Moe Odum<\/a> is one of the elite passers in college basketball. He is currently 23rd nationally and fourth in the Big 12 averaging 7.2 assists per game. He is also Top-5 in the Big 12 in total assists (36), steals (13), and minutes per game (33.3).Odum finished with six assists tonight and has now led the team in assists with 6+ assists in all five games of the season. Mukeba\u2019s 105 career blocks are tied for the 39th-most of any active NCAA Division I player. Freshman center Massamba Diop<\/a> has been one of the most impressive freshman in the country through five games. He is second on the team in points (13.6) and rebounds (6.2), producing at that level in only 28 minutes per game. He also has a team-high eight blocks and is second on the team with seven steals, doing all this while committing only eight personal fouls in five games. He has had at least one steal in every game and at least one block in four of five contests.<\/p>\n
Arizona State has received tremendous contributions from its bench through five games. After a 32-9 edge in bench points in the win over Hawai’i, the Sun Devils now hold a 126-78 (+48) advantage in bench points this season.\u00a0Anthony “Pig” Johnson<\/a>\u00a0led the way with his third double-digit scoring output this season.\u00a0Allen Mukeba<\/a>\u00a0added eight points and five rebounds, while\u00a0Noah Meeusen<\/a>\u00a0added three steals.

Through five games, the Sun Devils have been one of the nation’s best teams in transition. ASU outscored Hawai’i 17-5, including a 15-0 margin in the second half. Over the past two games (Hawai’i, Georgia State), the Sun Devils have a 44-10 edge in fast break points. Redshirt sophomore Sun Devil forward Santiago Trouet<\/a> has fit in seamlessly since transferring in from San Diego. In the matchup with No. 19 Gonzaga and a formidable frontline, Trouet had 10 points and 11 rebounds while adding two blocks. Trouet had two consecutive double-doubles earlier in the year, becoming the first Sun Devil since Kimani Lawrence<\/a> in 2021 to accomplish the feat. Only two Sun Devils finished with at least two double-doubles all of last year, and Trouet accomplished the feat in three games.<\/p>\n
Arizona State has held its first five opponents to a combined 34-of-124 from behind the arc. Teams are shooting a miniscule 27.4% from three-point range against the Sun Devils so far this season. That moves down to 24.4% in the second half off games.<\/p>\n

Does any team in the nation have a tougher road schedule on paper in the preseason than Arizona State? It would be tough to argue. They have five road games scheduled against teams ranked in the top-16 of the AP Preseason Poll. Coach Hurley has notched 172 wins at Arizona State and has done it while scheduling aggressively and not being afraid to play on the road. He has won 108 games in Arizona, but also has won at least five games in California (16), Nevada (13), Oregon (six) and Washington (five). His senior season was his finest, as he led the nation in field goal percentage at 66 percent, averaged 14.5 points and 8.2 rebounds per game, and earned First-Team All-Pac-10 honors. Notably, he delivered a 31-point, 11-rebound performance in a decisive win over Stanford in January 2009.<\/p>\n
