But on July 16, while she and her husband unloaded groceries, Grayson slipped out of their Plano home without anyone noticing. By the next morning, panic set in. Grayson wasn’t in any of his usual hiding spots.

From that moment, Pam launched into a near-full-time search. She walked the neighborhood day and night, posted on Facebook, put up flyers, checked shelters daily for more than a month, and uploaded Grayson’s photo to Love Lost, the national nonprofit Petco Love’s free AI photo-matching platform for missing pets.

She checked match alerts every single day for more than three months. Nothing. But she didn’t give up.

“I just kept thinking I would see his little face in the door, wanting to come in the house, or someone would call and say they have him,” Pam told Local Profile. “Your pets become family members, and there is always a special place in your heart for them.”

A Mile Away And Across A Highway

On Oct. 27, 103 days after Grayson vanished, a Plano woman named Missy spotted a skinny grey cat wandering in an alley near her home, a full mile away from Pam’s. And between them? A highway that even Pam says she wouldn’t want to cross on foot.

Missy took him in for the night, snapped a photo and uploaded it to Love Lost. Within moments, the platform’s AI matched her image to Pam’s long-standing lost report. Pam had been receiving daily match alerts for more than 90 days without any sign of Grayson, but the moment Missy posted her photo, the system recognized him instantly.

Photo: Petco Love

She messaged Pam through the platform and included the photo. Pam knew instantly: “Yes, that’s him.”

The Reunion

Pam rushed Grayson’s carrier to Missy, who picked him up and returned with him about half an hour later. “We opened the case, he walked out, went nose to nose with the dog, looked around, and must have been thinking, ‘I’m home.’”

After months outdoors, he’d lost weight — about ten pounds — but Missy had already taken him to the vet, where he was given a clean bill of health. Pam was stunned that his paws were still white. Even more shocking was that he survived predators like coyotes and mountain lions often spotted in the area.

“It is really a miracle he could travel that far being an indoor cat,” Pam said. “He has no front claws, nor did I think he had survival skills. How he made it was a miracle.”

A Tech Assist

Love Lost’s AI system has reunited more than 170,000 pets so far, and Pam is convinced it was the only reason she ever saw Grayson again.

“Love Lost is amazing. I’m sure that if we hadn’t posted his picture and enabled the ability to match the images, we would never have known what happened to Grayson,” she said.

Pam and Grayson

She also credits Missy for her effort, compassion and commitment to getting Grayson home.

“He must have known she would take care of him,” said Pam. “It takes a special person to take the time to reunite a beloved pet with their family.”

Grayson’s Next Chapter

Now, at almost 12 years old, Grayson is back to his routine, his weight and his favorite spots at home. Pam still looks at him, amazed. He made it through over three months of adventure.

“I am still amazed at Grayson’s journey,” she said. “Guess I will always wonder where he was and how many stops he made before he reached Missy’s loving home.”

After 103 days, Grayson found his way to the person who would make sure he found his way back.

Don’t miss anything Local. Sign up for our free newsletter.

Pam never imagined her 11-year-old indoor cat, Grayson, would get out of her home.
