La Vernia<\/a> is on a seven-game streak of home wins (dating back to last season), while Calallen<\/a> is on a four-game streak of away wins: one of those streaks is about to end. The Bears will host the Wildcats at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, these teams will really light up the scoreboard.<\/p>\n

La Vernia is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Friday. They enjoyed a cozy 51-33 victory over Somerset. The final result isn’t all that surprising considering the Bears’ considerable advantage in MaxPreps’ Texas football rankings (they are ranked 142nd, while the Bulldogs are ranked 369th).<\/p>\n

TY CARTER<\/a> continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines, rushing for 254 yards and four scores while picking up 15.9 yards per carry. Those 254 rushing yards gave him a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of SEAN GARZA<\/a>, who rushed for 63 yards and one TD on only seven carries.<\/p>\n

They were just one part of a punishing run game: La Vernia was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 387 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they’ve now rushed for at least 179 rushing yards in 20 consecutive contests dating back to last season.<\/p>\n

Special teams also played a big role in the game for La Vernia, adding 13 points to the final score. The biggest highlight from special teams (and perhaps the team as a whole) came courtesy of CARTER, who ran a kickoff back for a touchdown.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Calallen humbled Canyon Lake with a 42-14 victory. Considering the Wildcats have won five games by more than 23 points this season, Friday’s blowout was nothing new.<\/p>\n

The match pitted two dominant signal callers against one another in Connor Klostermann<\/a> and Jace Wheeler<\/a>. Klostermann had a great game on Friday and rushed for 85 yards and a pair of touchdowns on only 12 carries. Meanwhile, Wheeler was balling out in the loss, throwing for 222 yards and a pair of TDs, while also rushing for 80 yards on only ten carries.<\/p>\n

Calallen didn’t go easy on the quarterback and picked off three passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Drayson Gamez<\/a> and Chris Durham<\/a>. Gamez got in on the action too, converting a pick into a touchdown.<\/p>\n

La Vernia’s win bumped their record up to 11-1. As for Calallen, their victory bumped their record up to 10-2.<\/p>\n

Friday’s matchup might be decided on the ground. La Vernia has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 264 rushing yards per game. However, it’s not like Calallen struggles in that department as they’ve been averaging an even more impressive 191.5 rushing yards. There’s a good chance Friday’s contest turns into a tough fight on the ground.
