Tesla Chief Executive\u00a0Elon Musk<\/a> announced on Tuesday that the number of robotaxis in Austin, Texas, is expected to double in December, following the launch of the company\u2019s self-driving service in the city in June.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

“The Tesla Robotaxi fleet in Austin should roughly double next month,” Musk said in a post on X, which is also owned \u2060by him, News.Az<\/a> reports, citing Reuters<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It is not \u200cimmediately clear how many robotaxis Tesla operates.<\/p>\n

Tesla’s robotaxi service currently operates in two cities,\u200d Austin and the San Francisco Bay Area, with safety monitors still required in the vehicles. The company last week \u200balso received a permit to operate a ride-hailing service \u200cin Arizona.<\/p>\n

Musk said in October that he expected robotaxis to operate without safety drivers in large parts of Austin this year and that robotaxis would be operating in eight to ten metropolitan areas by the end of the \u2060year.<\/p>\n

In July, he said \u200bhe expected Tesla robotaxis to serve \u200babout half the U.S. population by year-end.<\/p>\n

After years of missed promises and several \u200dcompany closures due \u2060to high costs, tight regulations and federal investigations, the robotaxi industry has rebounded with Tesla, \u2060Alphabet’s Waymo, and Amazon’s Zoox speeding up \u200cexpansion.<\/p>\n
