Hanzo, a Japanese gastropub in Alamo Heights, suddenly closed its doors this week, leaving customers wondering what happened.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are temporarily closed, thank you,\u201d a letter posted outside the business reads. <\/p>\n

Speculation swirled online that the closure is related to a lawsuit involving the Mahoney Bar Group, which founded the drinking and dining spot in 2017.<\/p>\n

Hanzo, known for its handcrafted cocktails and happy-hour bites, hasn\u2019t posted online to explain the sudden closure. However, a lawyer Mahoney Bar Group provided a statement to MySA<\/a> stating that it\u2019s only temporarily shuttered.<\/p>\n

\u201cHanzo is currently undergoing renovations and is expected to\u00a0reopen by Jan. 2, 2026,\u201d said the statement shared by MySA. \u201cRegarding the lawsuit, the matter has been amicably resolved by a settlement with terms agreeable to all Parties.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mahoney Bar Group has incurred a streak of misfortune since the death of majority partner Robert Darilek in 2024. In the wake of his passing, Darilek\u2019s family took over the group\u2019s properties despite a lack of bar-management experience.<\/p>\n

Last fall, Darilek\u2019s son, Trey Darilek, told the Current<\/a> the takeover was necessary due to partner Steve Mahoney\u2019s poor financial management. The Current has been unable to reach Mahoney for comment on the matter.<\/p>\n

Since the management shift, the Mahoney Bar Group has closed multiple properties, starting with 2024\u2019s closure of Blue Box, a long-running lounge at The Pearl whose space now houses Best Quality Daughter owner Jennifer Hwa Dobbertin\u2019s new cocktail concept, Jue Let.<\/p>\n

\u201c[T]he closure of Blue Box was something unfortunate but unavoidable,\u201d Trey Darilek told the Current last fall. Darilek is a former trucking-company owner and one-time NFL guard and center who played for Dallas, Philadelphia and Miami.<\/p>\n

Darilek reloced from North Texas, and the family got to work paying back taxes the bars owed. Even so, state tax officials came to Francis Bogside in August of last year with a police escort to collect the remainder owed at that time. <\/p>\n

On Sept. 28, Mahoney Bar Group suddenly closed every business at Outpost Junction, a bar complex in St. Paul Square that housed the redux of Francis Bogside (since christened Blessed Bogside) along with Vino Veritas (formerly Anne\u2019s Wine Bar), Frankie\u2019s Roundup (formerly The Station) and the Box, an up-and-coming \u2014\u00a0and literally underground \u2014\u00a0club.<\/p>\n

The group announced the abrupt closure of the Outpost Junction venues in cross-shared Instagram post that startled followers and gave little context for their departure. <\/p>\n

\u201cWhat? Every single venue???\u201d Stephanie Guerra (@puropinchesa) asked in the comments. <\/p>\n

Given the rapid succession of closures of Mahoney Bar Group properties, it\u2019s little surprise some thought Hanzo was yet another casualty. But if the closure is, in fact, temporary, then it appears the Alamo Heights spot may have avoided the same fate.<\/p>\n
