Monarchs unable to find rhythm as Red Raiders stay perfect at 8-0.<\/p>\n
FRISCO, Texas \u2014 Old Dominion women\u2019s basketball couldn\u2019t overcome a cold shooting night and early Texas Tech runs, dropping the first game of the 2025 Women\u2019s Hoopfest Challenge, 67\u201342, on Tuesday night.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was a tough night of shooting and finding a rhythm suitable for us to make a better game to put on display,\u201d ODU head coach DeLisha Milton-Jones said. \u201cTexas Tech’s length bothered us on too many occasions tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n
Texas Tech (8-0) set the tone immediately, opening on a 7-0 run in the first four minutes, sparked by a Jaylnn Bristow three-pointer just 18 seconds after the opening tip. Free throws from Sarengbe Sanogo and Bailey Maupin pushed the early lead to seven.<\/p>\n
Old Dominion (5-2) briefly cut the deficit to three behind free throws from Laila Walker and a jumper by Kelsey Thompson, but the Lady Raiders closed the first quarter with a Bristow triple to lead 12-6.<\/p>\n
The Red Raiders continued to press the advantage in the second, starting the quarter on a 6-0 run and later adding a 7-0 burst to go up 25-7. ODU responded with a few key plays from Buford, including an and-one and a three-pointer late in the half, but Texas Tech carried a 31-18 lead into the break.<\/p>\n
The Lady Raiders pulled further away in the third quarter, using a 12-5 run to push the margin to 20 by the media timeout. Despite baskets from Cunningham and Fields, ODU couldn\u2019t generate enough stops, trailing 52-25 heading into the fourth.<\/p>\n
Collins opened the final period with a Texas Tech three to stretch the lead to 30. The Monarchs posted their strongest offensive frame with 17 fourth-quarter points, but the early deficit proved too steep as Texas Tech closed out the 67-42 victory.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhile we lost, I was pleased with certain efforts we showed from players entering the game,\u201d Milton-Jones said. \u201cWe will reset and gear up for Oregon on Thursday. Very quick turnaround that allows us to assess tonight\u2019s loss and move on.\u201d<\/p>\n
Buford led ODU with eight points and a made three, while Walker added six points and eight rebounds.
