{"id":66789,"date":"2025-11-27T01:43:10","date_gmt":"2025-11-27T01:43:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/66789\/"},"modified":"2025-11-27T01:43:10","modified_gmt":"2025-11-27T01:43:10","slug":"dead-fish-ducks-at-northeast-side-lake-draw-swarms-of-vultures","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/66789\/","title":{"rendered":"Dead fish, ducks at Northeast Side lake draw swarms of vultures"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">SAN ANTONIO \u2013 Hundreds of black vultures circle Northern Hills Lake on the Northeast Side, drawn by numerous dead fish and ducks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">In a statement, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department said it does not know what is causing the deaths of the animals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Despite an influx of Texas cormorants in the area, TPWD said it doesn\u2019t believe their arrival is causing the deaths.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">People who live by the lake off Scarsdale Street said this has been happening for a while.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cYes, I did, in fact, that was when summer started,\u201d Lupe Diaz said. \u201cHad a bunch of dead fish.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">In August, Priscilla Booker said she took her daughter down to the lake to see the ducks. A friend who accompanied them was the one who noticed something was off.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cShe said that it looked diseased or sick,\u201d Booker said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Booker said she thought it was odd that her friend had mentioned it, since the ducks had not started dying yet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cThe ducks were the reason why we ended up over there walking towards the pond because my baby wanted to see the ducks,\u201d Booker said. \u201cSo she looked at the ducks, and she\u2019s like, they\u2019re sick too. Everything over here is sick. We basically ended up walking right back home because she was angry about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Jenny Rivera, who just moved to the area, said she won\u2019t be taking her daughter to walk around the lake in the future.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cI would be risking my daughter, and I wouldn\u2019t want to do that,\u201d Rivera said. \u201cSo it is concerning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">As TPWD continues investigating the cause, the department said people don\u2019t necessarily need to avoid the area, but should not handle any sick or dead wildlife.
