According to American Express, more than 65 million people shopped at small businesses nationwide on Small Business Saturday last year, spending billions of dollars in local communities.<\/p>\n<p>Southside Corpus Christi businesses prepare for Small Business Saturday<\/p>\n<p>Local business owners say one of the biggest advantages of shopping small is finding items customers won\u2019t see everywhere else.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re not going to have 50 of one item,\u201d said Danelle Jamison, owner of Villa Tesoros in Corpus Christi. \u201cWe might have two or three of that item, which gives customers exclusivity. When someone compliments what you\u2019re wearing, you can say you got it at a local shop \u2014 and chances are it won\u2019t be restocked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other business owners agree that many shoppers are searching for something different during the holiday season.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople are looking for unique items,\u201d said Leslie Walberg, owner of Objects D\u2019 Art. \u201cSometimes they don\u2019t want to give the cookie-cutter gift that everyone else is giving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Beyond unique gifts, business owners say small businesses play a vital role in supporting the local economy in ways large retailers cannot.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBig box stores aren\u2019t giving money back to the community the way small businesses are,\u201d Jamison said.<\/p>\n<p>Owners say shopping locally helps support neighborhood events, local causes, and community initiatives.
