Bay Area Brewing Co<\/a>. in Rockport, customers come for a cold beer \u2014 and often end up meeting Spur, the brewery\u2019s one-spurred rooster who struts through the bar like he runs the place. He\u2019s become a familiar sight for regulars and a symbol of the community spirit the owners say defines the business.<\/p>\n\u201cHe goes up in his oak tree every night. He\u2019s part of the family here,\u201d said co-owner Will Amaya. \u201cEverybody that comes knows him. He\u2019s real popular.\u201d<\/p>\n
This Small Business Saturday, the brewery is joining a statewide effort to support Texas craft breweries. Each year, participating breweries sell a limited-edition pint glass, with at least one dollar from every purchase going to the Texas Craft Brewers Guild \u2014 a nonprofit that advocates for small, independent brewers.<\/p>\n
\u201cBeing a part of the Texas Craft Brewers Guild aligns you with a network of other breweries,\u201d Will said. \u201cThere\u2019s education, advocacy \u2014 it really supports Texas small craft breweries.\u201d<\/p>\n
This year\u2019s pint glass features artwork selected from statewide submissions.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe glass was designed by a local artist, Savannah Garza, and her design was chosen for this season\u2019s Small Business Saturday glass,\u201d Will Amaya said.<\/p>\n
For owners Diedra and Will Amaya, running a brewery has never just been about beer. They say it\u2019s about building a sense of belonging \u2014 and keeping small businesses alive in the Coastal Bend.<\/p>\n
\u201cOne of the biggest things for us when we opened was being a community business,\u201d said Diedra. \u201cWe got involved with the Texas Craft Brewers Guild right away and made it a priority for Will to become a regional coordinator for South Texas.\u201d<\/p>\n
With every pour and every visit, the Amayas say customers are contributing to something larger \u2014 supporting local jobs, local artists and local brewers.<\/p>\n
