It’s hard to say how the entire Aggie fan base is handling No. 3 Texas A&M’s<\/a> (11-1, 7-1 SEC) 27-17 loss to rival Texas<\/a> (9-3, 6-2 SEC) on Friday night<\/a>, but you can be sure some are experienced “Battered Aggie Syndrome,” which has become more than a joke over the last decade-plus.<\/p>\n

Yes, the Aggies are headed to the College Football Playoff for the first time in program history, but losing to your most hated rival for the second consecutive season is just as bad as missing out on the postseason for some.<\/p>\n

However, it’s time to take a deep breath, and realize that head coach Mike Elko<\/a> is on a solid trajectory, going from 8-4 to 11-1 in the regular in his second second year at the helm, while the New Jersey native has continued to recruit at a high level, and understands the NIL and transfer portal landscape necessary to thrive in today’s college football world.<\/p>\n

After signing a six-year extension this month, Friday’s loss in no way reflects the progress Texas A&M has made this season under Elko’s leadership. Still, as we know, recent results, especially rivalry games, continue to overshadow even the best seasons.<\/p>\n

Best example? Before Saturday’s 27-9 win over Michigan<\/a>, Ohio State<\/a>, which won last season’s National Championship, had failed to defeat the Wolverines for the previous four years, a streak that nearly led to Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day losing his job.<\/p>\n

While Elko has yet to defeat Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian, Texas A&M’s 11 wins in the regular season are the most since 1992, and even On3 CFB personality J.D. PicKell agrees that “BAS is not back” after losing to the Longhorns<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Over the next two weeks, Mike Elko and his staff will watch the film and (hopefully) fix the issues that plagued the Aggies on Friday night before likely hosting a team in the first round of the CFP.<\/p>\n
