AUSTIN, Texas \u2014\u00a0Leticia\u00a0Luna\u00a0and her husband David were waiting outside the departures area of Austin-Bergstrom International Airport the day before Thanksgiving. They were\u00a0waiting for their daughter to\u00a0come back around and pick them up again. Unfortunately, their flight was canceled.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cWe actually had an early Thanksgiving with my daughter here, so I\u2019m stuffed. But we\u2019re planning to have turkey again tomorrow with my son,\u201d said Leticia Luna.<\/p>\n
The Lunas both waited patiently for their flight to get rebooked,\u00a0and luckily, they were able to hop on another flight later Wednesday evening.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cHopefully we get home tonight and be able to spend time with my son, who\u2019s in\u2026the [Rio Grande] Valley,\u201d said David Luna.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The Lunas said they don\u2019t know why their flight was canceled, but they said the airline gave them very little notice. But as the shortage of air traffic controllers continues, many airports\u2014including the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport\u2014are struggling\u00a0with\u00a0delays and cancellations, weeks after the federal government reopened.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Spectrum News 1 reached out to the Federal Aviation Administration on Wednesday. It said in a statement, \u201cThe Federal Aviation Administration will use limited available military airspace if needed during the busy Thanksgiving holiday period to support the most efficient flow of traffic across the East Coast and the Gulf. The FAA is fully prepared to manage increased holiday traffic by also using\u00a0advanced Traffic Flow Management tools. For our Thanksgiving flight forecast go to the holiday travel page<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n However, U.S.\u00a0Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said delays and cancellations will continue into the holidays in December.<\/p>\n Duffy said the $12.5 billion Congress approved this summer to overhaul the nation\u2019s air traffic control won\u2019t be enough to fix the systems.
