{"id":73208,"date":"2025-12-02T19:06:08","date_gmt":"2025-12-02T19:06:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/73208\/"},"modified":"2025-12-02T19:06:08","modified_gmt":"2025-12-02T19:06:08","slug":"how-the-new-texas-bathroom-bill-works","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/73208\/","title":{"rendered":"How the new Texas bathroom bill works"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Bathroom_Bill_s_impact_0_2533530_ver1.0_640_360.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-v-7d0efd03=\"\"\/> article    <\/p>\n<p data-v-3646484b=\"\">A new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox7austin.com\/tag\/us\/tx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Texas<\/a> law mandating which bathrooms can be used by transgender people in government buildings goes into effect on Thursday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-3646484b=\"\">Here&#8217;s a look at how it affects the average Texan, as well as how the steep fines for breaking the rules will work.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> How does the Texas \u2018bathroom bill\u2019 work?  <\/p>\n<p data-v-3646484b=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/capitol.texas.gov\/BillLookup\/history.aspx?LegSess=89R&amp;Bill=SB8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Senate Bill 8<\/a>, known as the Texas &#8220;bathroom bill,&#8221; requires bathrooms in schools and government buildings to be tied to biological gender.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-3646484b=\"\">As of Thursday, transgender people will no longer be able to use a bathroom that coincides with the gender they identify with. This includes minors at public schools.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-3646484b=\"\">The law also limits which family violence shelters, prisons and jails can house transgender people.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-3646484b=\"\">The Texas attorney general will now have the power to investigate claims of violations and decide on the imposition of fines.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> \u2018Bathroom bill\u2019 fines <\/p>\n<p data-v-3646484b=\"\">Schools and government buildings found to allow violations of the bill will be subject to fines.<\/p>\n<p data-v-3646484b=\"\">The first violation can result in a $25,000 fine. Subsequent offenses can result in fines up to $125,000. The original version of the bill would have imposed $5,000 and $25,000 fines, which were quintupled in a last-minute amendment before being passed by the House.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-3646484b=\"\">The penalties are limited to the places housing the bathrooms.
