{"id":75617,"date":"2025-12-04T08:54:09","date_gmt":"2025-12-04T08:54:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/75617\/"},"modified":"2025-12-04T08:54:09","modified_gmt":"2025-12-04T08:54:09","slug":"choke-canyon-has-hit-historic-low-corpus-christi-city-officials-say","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/75617\/","title":{"rendered":"Choke Canyon has hit &#8216;historic low,&#8217; Corpus Christi city officials say"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">One of the city of Corpus Christi\u2019s two main reservoirs supplying water to the region has hit \u201ca historic low,\u201d according to a city memo.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Dated Dec. 3, the document states that Choke Canyon Reservoir was measured earlier in the day at 10% volume of its full 662,821-acre-feet capacity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The city is monitoring stream flows, according to officials, and Corpus Christi Water has also \u201cincreased its surveillance of the area to ensure that no one is illegally diverting water from the reservoir without proper notification or state permits,\u201d according to the memo.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Lake Corpus Christi, the second of the city\u2019s primary reservoirs, was recorded at 12.7% of its capacity, according to the memo.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Amid crippling drought, the city has increasingly shifted reliance from the two lakes to water sourced from out of the region, directed toward Corpus Christi via the Mary Rhodes Pipeline.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Currently, demand is about 110 million gallons of water per day, wrote City Manager Peter Zanoni in a message to the Caller-Times.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">About 65% is being drawn from what are described as the Eastern supplies \u2014 the Colorado River and Lake Texana \u2014 and about 35% from the Western supplies, which comprise Choke Canyon Reservoir, Lake Corpus Christi and Nueces River ground wells, he wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Stage 3 water restrictions have been in place for almost exactly a year.
