{"id":77315,"date":"2025-12-05T14:00:08","date_gmt":"2025-12-05T14:00:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/77315\/"},"modified":"2025-12-05T14:00:08","modified_gmt":"2025-12-05T14:00:08","slug":"san-antonio-city-council-names-11-members-of-newly-formed-pedestrian-and-transportation-safety-commission","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/77315\/","title":{"rendered":"San Antonio City Council names 11 members of newly formed pedestrian and transportation safety commission"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">SAN ANTONIO \u2013 Membership appointments for a newly formed pedestrian and transportation safety commission made up of transportation advocates and practitioners from across the spectrum were approved by San Antonio City Council this week. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">City Council <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2025\/05\/07\/new-pedestrian-and-bike-safety-commission-lands-on-sa-city-council-agenda\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">formally approved<\/a> the commission\u2019s creation in May 2025. It was initially approved with 13 members; however, a representative from District 2 and the Mayor\u2019s Office were not included.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The 11-person <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2025\/03\/21\/city-panel-clears-way-for-new-pedestrian-and-bike-safety-commission\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2025\/03\/21\/city-panel-clears-way-for-new-pedestrian-and-bike-safety-commission\/\">commission<\/a> also consists of appointees from the Alamo Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (AAMPO) and the VIA Metropolitan Transit Authority.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Below are the members and their respective council districts or jobs: <\/p>\n<p>District 1 appointee: James \u201cJim\u201d Bailey in the category of cyclist<\/p>\n<p>District 3 appointee: Melissa Gonzales in the category of transit rider<\/p>\n<p>District 4 appointee: Melanie Cawthon in the category of transportation disadvantaged<\/p>\n<p>District 5 appointee: Andre Green in the category of transit rider<\/p>\n<p>District 6 appointee: Jesse Harasta in the category of transit rider<\/p>\n<p>District 7 appointee: Guillermo \u201cWill\u201d Ramirez-Long in the category of cyclist<\/p>\n<p>District 8 appointee: Brandon Boehme in the category of traffic engineer <\/p>\n<p>District 9 appointee: Monica Lopez in the category of transportation disadvantaged <\/p>\n<p>District 10 appointee: Joseph \u201cJoey\u201d Pawlik in the category of cyclist<\/p>\n<p>AAMPO appointee: Matthew Moreno, regional transportation planner<\/p>\n<p>VIA appointee: Razi Hosseini, vice president of engineering<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The appointees\u2019 terms end on May 31, 2027, and the commission would meet quarterly and as needed, according to city documents. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The Multimodal Transportation Commission will provide input and recommendations to the city council on policies, other implementation actions and issues affecting pedestrians and transportation users, according to Transportation Department Catherine Hernandez.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The commission functions as a byproduct of several plans in San Antonio, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2025\/01\/31\/san-antonio-adopts-new-multi-billion-dollar-bike-plan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Bike Network Plan<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2024\/09\/19\/city-council-passes-update-to-complete-streets-policy-amid-new-city-budget\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Complete Streets policy<\/a>. Updates to these plans and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2024\/11\/08\/what-is-san-antonios-transit-oriented-development-and-why-is-it-unpopular-among-some-residents\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2024\/11\/08\/what-is-san-antonios-transit-oriented-development-and-why-is-it-unpopular-among-some-residents\/\">Transit-Oriented Development framework<\/a> requested a commission to help oversee implementation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">In an email to KSAT early this week, Harasta, a co-chair and co-founder of San Antonians for Rail Transit (SART), pointed to the city\u2019s outward growth and the transportation problems it causes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cI hope that we can encourage a different model, one which gives San Antonians the option of forms of transportation other than solely the private vehicle,\u201d Harasta said. \u201cI hope we can build a cleaner, safer, more efficient future for our city &#8211; one where we have the availability of choice in transportation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">SART is a nonprofit organization advocating for multimodal transportation options, including rail transit, in San Antonio.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Pawlik \u2014 who serves as the executive director of ActivateSA \u2014 pointed to several new and existing city policies as ways the committee could consider \u201cnew and efficient innovations\u201d for cyclists and pedestrians.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cNearly every day we hear of new deaths or serious injuries on our streets and for me, this is a daily reminder of the importance of our work ahead &#8211; to create safe, healthy, fear free streets for everyone,\u201d Pawlik said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">City documents specify that the commission\u2019s responsibilities will include:<\/p>\n<p>Serving as an advisor to the Transportation Department director on exceptions to the Complete Streets policy.<\/p>\n<p>Functioning as a recommending body for reviewing and updating policies, procedures and plan metrics, benchmarks and amendments to City Code.<\/p>\n<p>Receiving updates on the department\u2019s plans, policies and projects.<\/p>\n<p>What is multimodal transportation?<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The city\u2019s Transportation Department describes it as a method involving designing and planning transportation systems \u201cthat encompass multiple modes of travel, ensuring connections and efficient movement of people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Broadly speaking, those people can travel by car, bus, bike, scooter, rideshare or on foot.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">In an email to KSAT in March discussing the commission, Joe Conger, the department\u2019s public relations manager, outlined key considerations when discussing multimodal transportation.<\/p>\n<p>System connectivity: Prioritizes creating interconnected networks, allowing for easy transitions between different modes of transportation.<\/p>\n<p>User needs: Aims to meet the \u201cdiverse needs\u201d of various users, including pedestrians, cyclists, transit riders and motorists.<\/p>\n<p>Land use: Multimodal planning considers land use patterns regarding the impact of transportation choices and accessibility.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Some benefits of multimodal transportation include reducing congestion, improving traffic flow and promoting healthy communities, according to the department.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Read more:<\/p>\n<p>Copyright 2025 by KSAT &#8211;
