CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas \u2014 Corpus Christi residents will be paying more to turn on the tap in 2026, after city leaders approved new water and wastewater rate hikes set to hit on January 1. The announcement didn\u2019t exactly spark joy, especially for folks who found out the hard way.<\/p>\n

Velma Olvera was out walking her two dogs, Macy and Mimi the Chihuahua, when she learned the news. Her reaction was instant.<\/p>\n

\u201cPrices are going high and bringing up the prices on the water bills. That\u2019s just crazy, you know,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

City officials say the annual rate review showed the system needs more funding to maintain aging infrastructure. Council members ultimately agreed, voting to raise both water and wastewater rates.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat this is is in order to maintain the system then that\u2019s the cost associated with it,\u201d Councilman Roland Barrera said.<\/p>\n

For the average household using 6,000 gallons a month, the city says water bills will increase by about $4.78. Wastewater will tack on another $4.20. It\u2019s not a massive jump, but it\u2019s enough for some residents to feel the pinch.<\/p>\n

Olvera told us that even pouring herself a simple glass of water now feels like it comes with a little more sting.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t like the idea, but what can we do?\u201d she said. \u201cAs the people we are not in charge.\u201d<\/p>\n

For anyone already struggling to cover their bill, the city says help is available.
