Texas A&M (11-1, 7-1 SEC) may have finished the 2025 regular season on a low note after losing to rival Texas (9-3, 6-2 SEC) 27-17 last Friday night, as the Aggies endured their first loss of the year at the worst time. Still, head coach Mike Elko and his veteran team are locks for the College Football Playoff, but with Championship Weekend well underway, it’s still unclear where the Aggies will end up on Sunday morning.

However, things became much clearer after Texas Tech’s dominating 34-7 win over BYU in the Big 12 Championship Game: the No. 4-ranked Red Raiders will likely stay at No. 4 or move up to No. 3, earning the first-round bye, while the Cougars are all but eliminated from CFP contention.

How does this affect Texas A&M? If BYU had pulled off the upset, No. 10 Notre Dame would have been out, and the Aggies could have moved up a spot or two. Still, BYU proved it’s one of the worst 11-win teams in the bracket, and now solidifies that Texas A&M will stay at No. 7 and can only move down as far as No. 8, and will host a first-round game in Kyle Field.

Still, Texas A&M’s 15th-ranked strength of schedule and 3rd-ranked strength of record out-rank No. 6 Ole Miss in both categories, and CFP Selection Committee Chair Hunter Yurachek has yet to explain this choice.

Even if No. 9 Alabama defeats No. 3 Georgia in the SEC Championship Game, which doesn’t seem likely heading into halftime, the Aggies are likely guaranteed to host a first-round game in Kyle Field.

Need a news break?
