After more than a year of construction and temporary relocation, Allen Public Library is ready to welcome residents back to a larger, more modern space. The expansion aims to meet the evolving needs of Allen residents while maintaining the library\u2019s role as a community hub.<\/p>\n
The newly renovated facility at 300 N Allen Dr officially reopened on Dec. 8, offering expanded resources and community spaces that reflect years of planning and public input.<\/p>\n
A Long-Awaited Transformation<\/p>\n
Construction on the library\u2019s permanent home began in the summer of 2024, following a city council approval of a $19.9 million renovation<\/a> and expansion project. The library had temporarily relocated to 800 E. Main Street, the former Rountree Elementary School campus, in September 2024. Residents used that space while the main facility underwent a major overhaul.<\/p>\n The renovation adds 18,000 square feet to the library, creating larger dedicated areas for children and teenagers, flexible social gathering spaces and six study rooms that can now be reserved online. Visitors will also find four self-service checkout stations and an automated sorting system to manage the library\u2019s 150,000-item collection.<\/p>\n Funding And Community Input<\/p>\n The project<\/a> was primarily funded by a $16 million bond approved by Allen voters in 2016, with additional support from city maintenance funds and a $219,000 grant from the McDermott Foundation.<\/p>\n Planning<\/a> began years ago, with public surveys in 2021 and 2022 and guidance from a mayor-appointed citizen steering committee informing the design. Hidell and Associates Architects translated community feedback into the facility\u2019s updated layout and features.<\/p>\n Reopening Details<\/p>\n Allen Public Library will officially reopen this Monday, and new operating hours<\/a> will be:<\/p>\n
