DBH now has 48 teams in its portfolio, two shy of its current MLB cap of 50.<\/a> Its next two purchases, whenever they happen, can only be High-A or Single-A. DBH, which has invested about $2B in this endeavor, has hit its cap of 14 Double-A and Triple-A teams. <\/p>\n\u201cOur thesis is playing out, and we believe in the value proposition and we\u2019re very bullish on it,\u201d Freund said. \u201cAs of now we\u2019re at 48, and whether we get to 49 or 50 this year I have no idea. We\u2019re not actually actively looking to raise the cap at this time. But down the road we certainly might.\u201d <\/p>\n
After acquiring 48 teams in 48 months, DBH\u2019s lightning speed run of acquisitions is slowing down. At least for now. <\/p>\n
\u201cRight now we\u2019re focused on operating the 48 clubs that we have. We\u2019ve acquired 48 teams in 48 months, and we\u2019ve got to start seeing the synergies and the operational efficiencies,\u201d Freund said. \u201cWe\u2019ve just got to focus for the next 18-to-24 months on operating these clubs, and then at that time we may reassess. But we are not at this point going back to ask for more.\u201d <\/p>\n
Led by interim COO Andrew Malcom, DBH restructured operations during the spring, placing its teams into six regions and elevating high-performing GMs into VP oversight roles in each region. That has resulted in DBH improving business areas like marketing and dynamic ticket pricing. <\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re actually starting to take a breath and seeing if we can operate this thing we\u2019ve always believed we could,\u201d Freund said. <\/p>\n
As MiLB\u2019s national partner, DBH has doubled sponsorship growth and licensing is up 11%-12%, with minor-league brands moving into mass retailers<\/a>.
