They will pick the Democratic and Republican nominees for congressional seats after Texas\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonpublicmedia.org\/articles\/news\/politics\/2025\/12\/04\/537785\/texas-congressional-maps-supreme-court-ruling-2026-midterms\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">controversial mid-decade redistricting<\/a>, and for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonpublicmedia.org\/articles\/news\/2025\/12\/09\/538149\/texas-2026-midterms-will-shape-the-u-s-house-senate-and-more-here-are-the-biggest-races\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">high-profile statewide offices<\/a> such as governor, lieutenant governor and attorney general.<\/p>\n<p>All 150 seats in the Texas House of Representatives will be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sos.state.tx.us\/elections\/candidates\/guide\/2026\/offices2026.shtml\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">on the ballot in 2026<\/a>, along with 16 state senate seats and eight seats on the Texas State Board of Education. Voters also will elect four justices for the Texas Supreme Court as well as judges at the state and county levels.<\/p>\n<p>There are lots of local races as well, including for the top elected offices in Harris, Fort Bend, Galveston and Montgomery counties.<\/p>\n<p>Sign up for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonpublicmedia.org\/hellohouston\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Hello, Houston!<\/a> daily newsletter to get local reports like this delivered directly to your inbox.<\/p>\n<p>The candidate filing deadline for the March primaries was Monday evening, and Houston Public Media has a breakdown of who will be on the ballots for local voters.<\/p>\n<p>Below is a rundown of the Democratic and Republican candidates for notable county-level races, the race for one of Texas\u2019 two seats in the U.S. Senate and races for Houston-area seats in Congress. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonpublicmedia.org\/articles\/news\/politics\/2025\/12\/09\/538065\/house-senate-retirement-tracker-2026\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">record number<\/a> of congressional members are not seeking reelection in 2026, including five from the Houston area. <\/p>\n<p>CANDIDATES FOR MARCH 3 PRIMARY ELECTIONS <\/p>\n<p>HARRIS COUNTY<\/p>\n<p>Harris County Judge<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-531074\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/IMG_0370-1000x667.jpg\" alt=\"Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo confirmed her intentions to not seek reelection during a press conference Sept. 16, 2025.\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\"   data-eio=\"p\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Sarah Grunau\/ Houston Public Media<\/p>\n<p>Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo confirmed her intentions to not seek reelection during a press conference Sept. 16, 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats: Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo announced in September she would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonpublicmedia.org\/articles\/news\/politics\/2025\/09\/16\/530951\/harris-county-judge-lina-hidalgo-will-not-seek-re-election-in-2026\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">not seek a third term<\/a>. Three fellow Democrats have filed to succeed her, and two of them already have high profiles.<\/p>\n<p>Running in the Democratic primary in March are former Houston Mayor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonpublicmedia.org\/articles\/news\/harris-county\/2025\/06\/11\/523702\/former-houston-mayor-annise-parker-announces-run-for-harris-county-judge\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Annise Parker<\/a>, Houston City Council member <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonpublicmedia.org\/articles\/news\/politics\/2025\/07\/08\/525895\/houston-city-council-member-letitia-plummer-announces-run-for-harris-county-judge\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Letitia Plummer<\/a> and Matt Salazar, a University of Houston graduate and real estate agent.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans: Six members of the GOP have filed to run for county judge, a seat that was held by a Republican until Hidalgo upset Ed Emmett in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>The crowded race for next year\u2019s GOP primary includes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonpublicmedia.org\/articles\/news\/harris-county\/2025\/08\/20\/529081\/union-leader-marty-lancton-confirms-harris-county-judge-bid-backed-by-notable-gop-figures\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Marty Lancton<\/a>, the president of the Houston Professional Fire Fighters Association, former Harris County treasurer and city council member <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonpublicmedia.org\/articles\/news\/politics\/2025\/09\/23\/531664\/orlando-sanchez-former-county-treasurer-announces-bid-for-harris-county-judge\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Orlando Sanchez<\/a> and Aliza Dutt, the mayor of Piney Point Village. The other Republicans to file as candidates are former Harris County Sheriff\u2019s Office deputy Oscar Gonzales, former county judge candidate Warren Howell and George Harry Zoes, a Spring Branch business owner and former candidate for city council.<\/p>\n<p>Harris County Commissioner, Precinct 2<\/p>\n<p>Democrat: Incumbent Adrian Garcia is running unopposed in the Democratic primary.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans: Two candidates are vying for the GOP nomination to take on Garcia in next November\u2019s general election. They are Raquel Hernandez Boujourne, a construction business owner, and pastor Richard Vega.    <\/p>\n<p>Harris County Commissioner, Precinct 4<\/p>\n<p>Democrat: Incumbent Lesley Briones does not have an opponent for the March primary.<\/p>\n<p>Republican: Steve Radack, a former commissioner for Precinct 3, will be unopposed in the GOP primary before trying to unseat Briones next November.<\/p>\n<p>Harris County Attorney<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-526182 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Allred-Event_07-10-25_JustinDoud_5-1000x561.jpg\" alt=\"Christian Menefee\" width=\"1000\" height=\"561\"   data-eio=\"p\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Justin Doud\/ Houston Public Media<\/p>\n<p>Harris County Attorney Christian Menefee<\/p>\n<p>Democrats: In compliance with Texas\u2019 resign-to-run rules, acting Harris County Attorney Christian Menefee is leaving his post to run for the vacant seat in the 18th Congressional District.<\/p>\n<p>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonpublicmedia.org\/articles\/news\/politics\/2025\/12\/01\/537179\/harris-county-attorney-christian-menefee-commissioners-court-primary-election\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">While acting Harris County attorney seeks congressional seat, commissioners delay backfilling his position<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The fellow Democrats who filed to succeed Menefee as the county\u2019s top legal advisor are Houston City Council member <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonpublicmedia.org\/articles\/news\/harris-county\/2025\/12\/05\/537884\/houston-city-councilwoman-abbie-kamin-announces-bid-in-harris-county-attorneys-race\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Abbie Kamin<\/a> and Judge Audrie Lawton-Evans, who presides over Harris County Civil Court at Law No. 1. <\/p>\n<p>Republican: Jacqueline Lucci Smith, who narrowly lost to Menefee in 2024, is the lone candidate for the GOP primary. She has previously served as a judge for Harris County Civil Court at Law No. 2.<\/p>\n<p>Harris County District Clerk<\/p>\n<p>Democrats: Eight candidates are running to succeed fellow Democrat Marilyn Burgess, who announced she would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonpublicmedia.org\/articles\/news\/harris-county\/2025\/09\/23\/531629\/days-after-salary-complaint-harris-county-district-clerk-says-she-wont-seek-re-election\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">not seek reelection<\/a> a few days after Harris County commissioners struck down her request for an $81,000 raise.<\/p>\n<p>The field for the March primary includes Desiree Broadnax, a former candidate for Harris County Tax Assessor-Collector; Pernell Davis, a deputy chief of staff for Harris County Precinct 2; and Angie Dozier, a special services administrator for the district clerk\u2019s office. Those to have filed include District Court Judge <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonpublicmedia.org\/articles\/news\/fort-bend\/2025\/02\/07\/513266\/former-constable-and-district-judge-enter-race-for-fort-bend-county-judge\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">J. Christian Becerra<\/a>, attorney Rachelle Carter, Houston City College trustee Cynthia Lenton-Gary, Fort Bend County Commissioner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonpublicmedia.org\/articles\/news\/fort-bend\/2025\/12\/05\/537831\/fort-bend-county-judge-election-dexter-mccoy-democratic-primary\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dexter McCoy<\/a> and entrepreneur <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonpublicmedia.org\/articles\/news\/fort-bend\/2025\/02\/18\/514116\/democratic-political-consultant-entrepreneur-enters-race-for-fort-bend-county-judge\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Eddie Sajjad<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans: George, the incumbent who switched political parties this year, will attempt to hold off a handful of challengers in the Republican primary. Those to have filed include Daryl Aaron, Kenneth Omoruyi, Melissa M. The group of Democrats includes Maggie Salomon, April L. Jones, Brittanye Lashay Morris, Haroon Mughal, Robert Nnake, Nicole Roberts and Nabile Shike, a constable who previously was running for county judge.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans: Seeking the Republican nomination are engineer Abolaji Ayobami, financial advisor Ramesh Kumar Cherivirala, business owner Ken Mathews and peace officer Adam Schoof.<\/p>\n<p>GALVESTON COUNTY<\/p>\n<p>Galveston County Judge<\/p>\n<p>Democrat: Albert Smith of Texas City was the lone candidate to file, according to the Texas Secretary of State website.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans: Longtime County Judge Mark Henry, first elected in 2010, is seeking another term. He&#8217;ll be challenged in the March primary by Chris Kinard, the wife of Galveston County District Clerk John Kinard.<\/p>\n<p>MONTGOMERY COUNTY<\/p>\n<p>Montgomery County Judge<\/p>\n<p>Democrat: James Graf was the lone candidate to file for the Democratic primary, according to the Texas Secretary of State website.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans: Incumbent Mark Keough has drawn a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonpublicmedia.org\/articles\/news\/politics\/2025\/12\/08\/537983\/montgomery-county-judge-mark-keough-wayne-mack-republican-primary\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">primary challenge<\/a> from longtime Justice of the Peace Wayne Mack.<\/p>\n<p>Montgomery County Commissioner, Precinct 2<\/p>\n<p>Democrats: No candidates filed to run, according to the Texas Secretary of State website.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans: Bob Harvey of The Woodlands is challenging incumbent Charlie Riley of Magnolia in the March primary. Riley is serving his third term.<\/p>\n<p>Montgomery County Commissioner, Precinct 4<\/p>\n<p>Democrats: No candidates filed to run, according to the Texas Secretary of State website.<\/p>\n<p>Republican: As of Wednesday, the Texas Secretary of State website did not show that any candidates had filed to challenge incumbent Commissioner Matt Gray.<\/p>\n<p>FEDERAL<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Senator from Texas<\/p>\n<p>Democrats: U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett, a Dallas Democrat and University of Houston law school graduate, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.keranews.org\/politics\/2025-12-08\/jasmine-crockett-running-for-us-senate-democrat\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">entered the race<\/a> on Monday \u2013 when former Congressman Colin Allred dropped out. State Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonpublicmedia.org\/articles\/news\/politics\/2025\/09\/15\/530807\/texas-rep-james-talarico-not-taking-instructions-or-orders-from-national-democratic-party-in-run-for-senate\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">James Talarico<\/a> of Austin is another prominent Democrat vying for the seat occupied by U.S. Sen. (AP Photo\/LM Otero)<\/p>\n<p>Ahmad Hassan of Katy also filed to run in the Democratic primary.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans: Cornyn is seeking a fifth term in Washington but faces a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonpublicmedia.org\/articles\/news\/politics\/elections\/2025\/10\/09\/532981\/john-cornyn-ken-paxton-in-statistical-dead-heat-in-gop-primary-for-u-s-senate-from-texas-poll-finds\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">stiff challenge<\/a> from the right in Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. U.S. Rep. Wesley Hunt of Houston also is gunning for Cornyn&#8217;s seat.<\/p>\n<p>The other Republicans to have filed as candidates are John O. Adefope, Anna Bender, Virgil John Bierschwale and Gulrez &#8220;Gus&#8221; Khan.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Representative, District 2<\/p>\n<p>Democrat: Shaun Finnie, an investment banker from Spring, was the only Democrat to file in this race.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans: Incumbent U.S. Rep. Dan Crenshaw is facing a primary challenge from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonpublicmedia.org\/articles\/news\/politics\/2025\/07\/16\/526563\/state-rep-steve-toth-to-challenge-congressman-dan-crenshaw-in-republican-primary\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">state Rep. Steve Toth<\/a> of The Woodlands and Martin Etwop.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Representative, District 7<\/p>\n<p>Democrat: As of Wednesday, incumbent Lizzie Fletcher of Houston was the only candidate to file for the March primary, according to a list of candidate filings on the Texas Secretary of State website.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans: Tina Cohen, a Houston business owner, was the only candidate listed on the Texas Secretary of State website as of Tuesday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Representative, District 8<\/p>\n<p>Democrats: The retirement of Republican U.S. Rep. Morgan Lutrell is leaving this Montgomery County-based seat open. Keith Coleman of Montgomery and Laura Jones of Coldspring filed for the Democratic primary.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans: Brett Jensen of Pinehurst, Stephen Long and Nick Tran of The Woodlands, Conroe attorney Jessica Hart Steinmann and Deddrick T. Wilmer of Cypress have filed to run in a district that favors the GOP.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Representative, District 9<\/p>\n<p>Democrats: Incumbent U.S. Rep. Al Green is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonpublicmedia.org\/articles\/news\/politics\/2025\/11\/07\/535536\/al-green-18th-congressional-district-march-primary-houston-democrat\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">shifting to the 18th Congressional District<\/a> after he was drawn out of the 9th by Texas Republicans. Briscoe Cain, R-Deer Park, following a Republican Caucus meeting at the State Capitol, Friday, Aug. 8, 2025, in Austin, Texas.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans: In a district that was redrawn to include Liberty County and favor Republicans, state Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonpublicmedia.org\/articles\/news\/politics\/2025\/08\/22\/529266\/houston-area-gop-state-rep-briscoe-cain-signals-intent-to-run-for-seat-in-redrawn-9th-congressional-district\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Briscoe Cain<\/a> of Deer Park and former Harris County Judge candidate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonpublicmedia.org\/articles\/news\/politics\/2025\/08\/25\/529389\/former-county-judge-candidate-alexandra-del-moral-mealer-declares-bid-for-redrawn-9th-congressional-district\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alex Mealer<\/a> are the most prominent GOP candidates.<\/p>\n<p>Others include Jaimy Blanco of Pasadena, Michael A. Curran, Dan Mims of Channelview, Crystal DeLeon Sarmiento of Manvel, Dwayne Stovall of Cleveland and Terry Lee Thain.  <\/p>\n<p>U.S. Representative, District 10<\/p>\n<p>Democrats: In this seat held by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonpublicmedia.org\/articles\/news\/politics\/2025\/09\/15\/530803\/longtime-gop-rep-michael-mccaul-says-he-will-not-seek-reelection-to-congress\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">retiring Republican U.S. Rep. Michael McCaul<\/a>, Dawn Marshall, Bernie Reyna and Caitlin Rourk have filed for the Democratic primary.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans: With the retirement of McCaul, this district that stretches from the Houston area to the Austin area is up for grabs. The fellow Republicans to have filed are Rob Altman of Bryan, Ben Bius of Huntsville, Chris Gober of Austin, Brandon Hawbaker of Sealy, Jessica Karlsruher of Austin, Kara King of Lakeway and Jenny Garcia Sharon, a Houston native.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Representative, District 14<\/p>\n<p>Republican: Incumbent Randy Weber of Friendswood is being challenged in the March primary by Jessica Forgy, a farmer from Alvin.<\/p>\n<p>Democrat: Thurman Bill Bartie, Richard Davis and Konstantinos Vogiatzis have filed as Democratic candidates for the primary.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Representative, District 18<\/p>\n<p>Democrats: U.S. Rep. Al Green, the longtime representative of the 9th Congressional District, is switching to the 18th after Texas&#8217; mid-decade redistricting. In the March primary he could end up facing both Harris County Attorney Christian Menefee and former Houston City Council member Amanda Edwards, who are the candidates in the upcoming <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonpublicmedia.org\/articles\/news\/politics\/elections\/2025\/11\/25\/537016\/houston-18th-congressional-district-runoff-edwards-menefee\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">special election runoff<\/a> to complete the term of late U.S. Rep. Sylvester Turner. Troy Nehls is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonpublicmedia.org\/articles\/news\/politics\/2025\/11\/29\/537264\/troy-nehls-retiring-congress-texas-republican-delegation\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">retiring<\/a> and has endorsed his twin brother, Trever Nehls, for this seat based on Fort Bend County. The other Republican to have filed is Rebecca Clark of Fulshear,  <\/p>\n<p>U.S. Representative, District 29<\/p>\n<p>Democrats: Incumbent U.S. Rep. Sylvia Garcia has drawn a primary challenge from Jarvis Johnson, a former state representative and Houston City Council member, in this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonpublicmedia.org\/articles\/news\/politics\/2025\/10\/23\/534072\/this-newly-drawn-houston-district-could-unearth-tensions-between-democrats-of-color\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">district that was redrawn<\/a> by Texas Republicans.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans: No GOP candidates were listed on the Texas Secretary of State website as of Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Representative, District 36<\/p>\n<p>Democrats: The March primary will include Rhonda Hart of Dickinson and Doug Alan Rogers of Beaumont.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans: Incumbent Brian Babin of Woodville is facing a primary challenge from Jonathan &#8220;Pipeliner&#8221; Mitchell.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Representative, District 38<\/p>\n<p>Democrats: The primary field for this Houston congressional seat includes Marvalette Hunter, who worked as chief of staff for former Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner, along with school counselor Theresa Courts and Melissa McDonough, a real estate from professional from Tomball.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans: Seeking to succeed U.S. Rep.
