{"id":84241,"date":"2025-12-11T07:39:08","date_gmt":"2025-12-11T07:39:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/84241\/"},"modified":"2025-12-11T07:39:08","modified_gmt":"2025-12-11T07:39:08","slug":"roosevelt-avenues-deadly-reputation-pushes-community-plea-for-immediate-safety-improvements","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/84241\/","title":{"rendered":"Roosevelt Avenue\u2019s deadly reputation pushes community plea for immediate safety improvements"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">SAN ANTONIO \u2013 If you drive down Roosevelt Avenue on San Antonio\u2019s South Side, it\u2019s hard to keep count of how many crosses mark traffic fatalities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">However, Cecilia Perez said she knows the number by heart between Loop 410 and Sava Street.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cThirty-eight, just right here,\u201d Perez said. \u201cHow many more until we get help?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Perez is a lifelong neighbor, and she makes crosses for every person who has died in a crash along this road.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Neighbors tell KSAT speeding and missing safety features have turned their street into a deadly danger zone. That\u2019s why they\u2019re calling on the city and state for help.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cOne is too many,\u201d Olga Martinez, the president of the Villa Coronado Neighborhood Association, said. \u201cThis should not be happening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The most recent death came last week. On Dec. 3, San Antonio police said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2025\/12\/03\/woman-dead-after-vehicle-hits-drags-her-one-block-on-far-south-side-sapd-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Josefina Villarreal<\/a>, 63, was killed after she was hit and dragged by a vehicle about one block on Roosevelt Avenue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Perez said Villarreal was a \u201clovely\u201d person and called her a friend.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cAll we want is a safe way to get out of our community, get into our community, and cross over Roosevelt,\u201d Martinez said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The Texas Department of Transportation is working on a Roosevelt Avenue project.
