{"id":84534,"date":"2025-12-11T21:58:39","date_gmt":"2025-12-11T21:58:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/84534\/"},"modified":"2025-12-11T21:58:39","modified_gmt":"2025-12-11T21:58:39","slug":"hurst-appoints-new-police-chief-after-previous-leaders-unexpected-death","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/84534\/","title":{"rendered":"Hurst appoints new police chief after previous leader&#8217;s unexpected death"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Hurst City Council unanimously confirmed a new police chief at their Dec. 9 meeting.<\/p>\n<p>Assistant Police Chief Billy Keadle, who had succeeded previous chief Steve Niekamp on an interim basis, was officially promoted to the top role.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lucasfuneralhomes.com\/obituaries\/steven-niekamp\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Niekamp served as police chief<\/a> from 2018 until his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hursttx.gov\/Home\/Components\/News\/News\/495\/28\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">unexpected death in September<\/a> due to health complications at 56 years old. He joined the department in 1990.<\/p>\n<p>Keadle has been a member of the Hurst Police Department since 2001. He was promoted to assistant police chief in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>A press release notes that members of the public <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hursttx.gov\/Home\/Components\/News\/News\/525\/28\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">can connect with Chief Keadle<\/a> at the city&#8217;s annual Town Hall Forum in February.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver the past few months, the character of this department has been revealed in powerful ways. You&#8217;ve shown professionalism, dedication, resilience,\u201d Keadle said after receiving the police chief badge. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am humbled, grateful and ready to get to work,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Keadle later told KERA that after three decades in the field, he adjusts his leadership style based on the situation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere&#8217;s a time and a place for the different styles,\u201d he said. \u201cI&#8217;m open to new ideas. I want to explore them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Keadle said he plans to continue filling vacancies in the department, pointing out pay and benefits to potential recruits. The department has six people scheduled for the academy in January.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re reaching out to colleges, we&#8217;ve been to job fairs, we&#8217;re advertising on social media, and we are encouraging our people to share with their friends or family and get the word out that we have openings, that we need good people,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>At the council meeting, City Manager Clay Caruthers told a full house of first responders, city officials and residents that of the five candidates interviewed for the role, he feels \u201cvery, very confident\u201d in Keadle\u2019s understanding of the city\u2019s vision.<\/p>\n<p>Caruthers said Keadle has expressed that \u201cwhile we won&#8217;t continue to just do things the way we always have, he is going to look for ways that we can continue to go from good to great.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Caruthers added that the department has \u201cthe right culture to move us into the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hursttx.gov\/about-us\/departments\/police-department\/about-us\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Hurst Police Department has 73 sworn officers<\/a>. It was founded in the 1950s when the city was incorporated.<\/p>\n<p>Got a tip?
