If your kid misbehaved, you\u2019d correct them, right? The goal is always growth. Always doing better. Communities shouldn\u2019t be any different.<\/p>\n

For years, some of us quietly rolled our eyes when Lubbock<\/a> was declared \u201cThe Friendliest City in America.\u201d Not because Lubbock isn\u2019t friendly \u2014 it often is \u2014 but because that title felt a little bold. A little unfinished. Friendliness, after all, should be universal, not conditional.<\/p>\n

When Friendliness Comes With Fine Print In Lubbock<\/p>\n

The uncomfortable truth is that kindness in Lubbock sometimes comes with requirements. Do you attend the right church? Do you vote the right way? If the answer is no, friendliness can evaporate fast. That\u2019s not real hospitality \u2014 that\u2019s selective acceptance. And frankly, it\u2019s rotten-to-the-core criteria for judging who deserves basic human respect.<\/p>\n

That reality became glaringly obvious when I recently saw a woman announce her candidacy for political office. What followed wasn\u2019t debate, or disagreement, or policy discussion. It was cruelty. Nasty, personal attacks untethered from anything she had actually said or done. The comments weren\u2019t clever or insightful \u2014 they were mean for sport.<\/p>\n

The Internet Never Forgets \u2014 And Neither Do Visitors<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s what many people fail to consider: comments on social media don\u2019t exist in a vacuum. They are public. Permanent. Searchable. People who are thinking about visiting Lubbock \u2014 or moving here \u2014 see that bile. Yes, social media as a whole is a dumpster fire, but that excuse only goes so far. Just because behavior is common doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s acceptable.<\/p>\n

These online moments shape Lubbock\u2019s reputation far more than slogans or marketing campaigns ever could.<\/p>\n

A Simple Test Before You Hit \u201cPost\u201d<\/p>\n

Before typing out that comment, ask two questions:
Is my opinion even needed?
Would I be comfortable saying this to their face?<\/p>\n

Some people will claim the answer is \u201cyes\u201d to both. In reality? Almost none of these situations would ever result in someone saying those words out loud, in public, to another human being.<\/p>\n

Doing Better Starts With Owning Our Mistakes<\/p>\n

I\u2019m not speaking from some imaginary high ground. I\u2019ve been guilty of being awful online myself. But I\u2019ve worked hard to change that \u2014 to spread less poison and more positivity on my personal pages. That\u2019s all I\u2019m asking of people who truly love Lubbock: do better.<\/p>\n

Lubbock could be the friendliest city in America. But that starts with the image we project to the rest of the world \u2014 and how we treat each other when we think no one important is watching.<\/p>\n

We don\u2019t have to agree.
We don\u2019t have to like each other.
But we don\u2019t need to be publicly cruel in ways that damage everyone.<\/p>\n
