Ella Langley‘s “Choosing Texas” is a good old-fashioned country heartbreaker — though when it’s coming from this artist, many fans will read some autobiography into the lyrics.

Langley has been rumored to be at the center of a real-life triangle with her two-time duet partner Riley Green and fellow country singer Megan Moroney.

Gossip swirled around the three singers between late 2024 and mid-2025, with the theory being that Green and Langley might’ve gotten flirty around the time they recorded “You Look Like You Love Me” — and that Green later dated Moroney.

None of those romances were ever confirmed, and in fact, all three parties outright denied them.

But social media sleuths have worked diligently to prove there’s more to the story than the artists are saying. That includes this particular song release.

When Langley shared the single art for “Choosing Texas,” some pointed out that the artwork — a man and a blonde woman driving away in a top-down convertible — looked a whole lot like this fan-snapped photo of two people believed to be Green and Moroney going for a joyride in small-town Alabama.

Of course, Langley’s artwork also includes a road sign reading “Welcome to Amarillo,” and no one involved in the rumor is from Texas.

A more plausible explanation for the focus on the Lone Star State? Miranda Lambert is a co-writer on the song, and she sings backing vocals, too.

If you’re digging into this song hoping to get some tea on the Riley Green theory, sorry for your luck. There’s nothing here that sheds any kind of light on those rumors.

At best, you could argue that it’s an especially gracious heartbreak song, with no bad blood for the other woman involved.

Think less Carrie Underwood‘s “Before He Cheats,” more Dolly Parton‘s “Jolene.” Langley’s lyrics are sad about the way things ended, but she’s not blaming anybody. In some ways, she sings, she should’ve known all along that things would end this way.

Still, it’s worth it to do a lyrical deep dive on this song. Especially with heavyweight collaborators like Lambert, Luke Dick and Joybeth Taylor, Langley is one the sharpest and most evocative songwriters in the genre.

What Are the Lyrics to Ella Langley’s “Choosing Texas”?

Just when I thought I got him to fall in love with Tennessee / Should’ve known better than to take him back to Abilene / Put him right back into her arms / I wasn’t a match for that kind of spark

Chorus:

She’s from Texas, I can tell by the way / He’s two stepping ’round the room / And judging by the smile that’s written on his face / There’s nothing I can do / It doesn’t take a crystal ball to see / A cowboy always finds a way to leave / Drinking Jack all by myself / He’s choosing Texas, I can tell

Well, I guess he forgot about the Smoky Mountain rain / Them ol’ Hank tunes that meant those blues we used to sing / He always loved “Amarillo by Morning” / I should’ve taken that as a warning…

Repeat Chorus

When I’m eastbound and down I can’t help but cry / ‘Cause I-40 gets lonelier with every mile / And I know that his mind wasn’t ever gonna change / Because his heart still belongs to the Lone Star State

Repeat Chorus

C’mon, baby

Just when I thought I got him to fall in love with Tennessee…
